I have taught middle school history in Santa Fe, led and organized dance competitions for middle school students in west Philadelphia, and spent a year teaching English as a second language in Taiwan for students grades 2-6. Composition is one of my top subjects! I have worked in law since 2001 as a paralegal and my job consists of a tremendous amount of writing and reading along with writing briefs, doing research, corresponding with federal and state agencies, judges and attorneys. I was a community college English teacher for 12 years at Vista Community College in Berkeley, CA (now Berkeley City College). I taught in a special program tailored to working adults who had returned to school in order to earn their Associate of Arts degrees. This was not an academically confident population. They required enormous encouragement, personal attention, and coaching. I was very successful in this position because I was willing to talk with students on the phone, meet with them after class, and even respond to their essays at length on cassette tapes--my own idea!
