My comments on tutoring College Algebra : I have tutored 3 individuals in this area, it's pretty exciting!

Very much based on working with what the student knows. I tend to start by having them explain to me what they are doing and what they think. I then provide some guidance and walk through a sample problem with them. I ask that they try another problem like it on their own and ask questions to prompt them as they work.
I started tutoring in high school for extra credit. I have primarily tutored in mathematics and general chemistry! I tutored a girl in Algebra 1 for a year, helped my best friend and her Mom with college mathematics, and worked through college algebra with my husband. I utilize a lot of unique strategies such as math songs to remember mathematical principals and practices and games to engage the learner and make the learning experience memorable. When I have worked with older students this style changes a little, I maintain my excitement about the subject area, but we do a lot more practice problems. A Little Bit About Me...

Although I have never formally taught in a classroom on my own, I did assist in teaching a few of the classes I took during my first degree schoolwork while working toward my Bachelor Degree in Accounting. I assisted other classmates who didn't seem to catch on to the material as quickly as I did. Given that one of the subjects was government accounting, which is completely different from what we were used to learning, I embraced the challenge of helping others as well as bettering my own understanding of the material. Classroom discussions aren't very interesting if you've only got 1 or 2 people, out of 20, who know what you are talking about. Repetition is an excellent way to retain knowledge, which it was, and still is today.
