I have worked as an elementary school teacher for 7 years. I have been fortunate enough to teach grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. In my experience I have found that children build confidence through small successes. My philosophy is to set maintainable goals allowing students to meet them frequently building confidence and motivation. I am structured yet kind. Kids need to feel a connection to their teacher in order to give 100%. I work a great deal on building community in my classroom and allowing kids to appreciate the diversity among themselves. Not all kids are going to excel in all areas. They need to value what they are really good at and share that with their peers. This also creates miniature "experts" which makes all kids feel good. Once a child feels successful; in one area it encourages them to tackle something they are less comfortable with.

I am a certified level 2 special education teacher with five years experience teaching students with a variety of disabilities. I have been trained in Orton-Gillingham reading methodology. I have successfully helped students learn strategies and implement tools to address dyslexia, reading comprehension, and spelling. I also am skilled at addressing math calculation and math reasoning deficits. My focus is on helping students understand how English and math work. I am currently working on receiving my certification as an Educational Diagnostician in order to diagnose disabilities and recommend appropriate educational interventions. My teaching style is playful but structured. I focus on helping students establish feelings of success. I enjoy helping my students recognize their success. Students are taught using multi-sensory strategies and manipulatives to help students build connections

I believe that people learn the best when they understand the meaning and logic behind what they are learning. When a student can see a pattern develop they develop an understanding that can be universally applied to many different areas of study and life circumstances. Learning is different then memorizing. It is especially important to understand the concepts behind the subject matter when planning continue in a similar learning subject. I am a licensed Social worker with tutoring experience in and out of college. I have the most experience in tutoring Algebra and other math. I have a student now that I am helping with AP English who has dyslexia. I enjoy watching her grammar skills increase and her overall understanding of the concepts develop. I am great with any age individual and have the patience it takes to work with any kind of student (special needs included).
