Piano is one of my top subjects! I taught beginners as young as 5 in the past, and I myself have been playing the piano for 14 years - since I was eight :) So I know very well what would help minds and fingers of any age learn a new instrument!

For tutoring, I prefer face-to-face lessons, because it makes it easier for me to gauge how well the student is understanding the material. I try to explain concepts in a variety of ways to find out how the student learns best, whether through repetition, example, metaphor, application... whatever works! I have tutored kids with all kinds of needs and a few with pretty short attention spans :) For piano lessons, I would use the Alfred library of teaching materials, as that is how I was taught and it works wonders on new learners! In addition to reading music, I would focus on performance techniques and theory as well.

As a teacher of urban students and students who have experienced sever trauma (Hillside), I have gained a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by children today such as home environment and poverty. My teaching style is very structured and includes various modes of instruction. I try to utilize cooperative learning strategies when ever possible. Students can learn alot from each other both intellectually as well as socially. To help students to learn the vast amount of vocabulary included in most science curriculums I teach my students to determine word meanings by braking words down into their latin roots or “decoding”.
