I believe all students can learn. I strive to accomplish this by basing my teaching style upon the learning style of my students. In my classroom I implement discovery and inquiry as an approach to learning. Currently as a reading specialist I focus on individualization because at the secondary level each student has unique needs. In addition, I work to incorporate reading across the curriculum to help my students develop the skills needed to read and comprehend the textbooks in all the disciplines.
As a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, I began my teaching career in mathematics at the junior high school level. I taught Algebra I to eighth graders. My teaching style is very much one of observation and tailoring lessons to fit the student best. I typically use one series of method books, but sometimes choose other repertoire outside of the curriculum in order to best teach the student in the area that they need. I have had students with Asperger's syndrome (a form of autism) and dyslexia.I have also taught all age groups, ranging from 4 years to 65 years. Whether I am chosen as a teacher by the student for academic reasons, to prepare for a talent show, or fulfill an entry on their bucket list, I strive to show true interest in their learning and provide the best explanations and most creative lessons I can.
