It always seemed I was the "smart, nice one" in the class, from elementary school through graduate school. I have helped students study for exams, practice speeches and presentations, perform research for projects, and compose and edit papers for students from sixth grade up to doctoral programs. I am especially skilled in the areas of social science, natural science and language.

My comments on tutoring Study Skills : I home schooled my children and have developed techniques to make the most uninterested students interested in learning. I have employed this technique with special needs students with great success as well.

I have a law degree, but most of my experience comes from working with my own kids and spending hundreds of hours volunteering at their schools helping other children. I home schooled my children for 3 years for the middle school years and so I have experience motivating the surly teen who has no motivation to work as well as the young child that just wants to play. I also taught my children and many others how to read at very young ages and have perfected the technique for teaching children math and reading who love to move. One of my children had ADD and so I know how to work well with this issue. I also have a technique for teaching multiplication and math to very young children. You can see an example of the results of my work here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnBCQKn8wBs. The key is making everything FUN!!! This applies whether a younger or older child.

I have been working at Hermitage High School in Henrico County as an English teacher for the past 4 years. I have taught 9th grade, but I have spent most of my time teaching 11th grade. I have taught a variety of "levels," from standard to college prep to honors. Every year I teach about 130 students. Last year, only 5 of my students didn't p ass the 11th grade SOL, and after re-takes the following week, only 1 didn't pass. I was trained to be a SAT tutor using the TCA program in the county. On any given morning, I will have 1-4 students in my room with me while I tutor them for the SATs.

I have a bachelor's degree in English from Tulane University, and I've also started my teacher certification. While I was in college, I worked in three local charter schools tutoring kids in grades 1-8 in reading, as well as helping them with language arts, math, social studies, and writing skills as needed. I got to take classes on early childhood education in subjects such as children's literacy and classroom management, and I even wrote my own children's book! I was also part of a program that helped high schoolers of all writing levels and styles produce great essays. I'm hoping to return to school to get my master's in Reading to become a reading specialist in the future.

I try to adapt to the way the student prefers. I understand that there are various ways people obtain and grasp knowledge.
I am a recent high school graduate. I graduated in the top fourth of my class. My GPA is a 3.48. My best subject is math. I enjoy helping and working with others to help them succeed. I completed a class in high school named Teach Cadet where I learned the basics about education and the importance of being a versatile teacher. I was able to work with children from head start to elementary level. I also was a member of two organizations at school where I worked with sixth graders about the importance of goals and worked with fourth graders about the importance of team work.

My comments on tutoring Study Skills : Studying can seem like work. It can also be overwhelming. I will teach students how to break down their assignments into smaller, yet still effective modules that are both approachable as well as accessible. I also will show students the benefits of taking small, rewarding breaks throughout a study session.

Personalized, sensitive to the student's needs, fun, and encouraging. At the same time, disciplined and goal-oriented throughout.
As a journalist, I have had the privilege of reporting from the White House Briefing Room many times during last few years. Since the 1990's, I have researched, consulted, and designed numerous international business and government-related projects. For the last 4 years my articles on China have been published by "The Diplomat", www.TheDiplomat.com. Having lived in China for many years, I am qualified to tutor in Mandarin Chinese. In my early career years, I tutored international students in English. As a small business owner, I know how to market and build brands. I look forward to being useful to you and your student.

I am a seasoned veteran of working for a large agency with multiple responsibilities across the State of Virginia. I have been tutoring, mentoring, teaching, training, and instructing on many subjects during my career. I have passion and dedication to whatever subjects I teach and I plan to impart a sense of enthusiasm in the subject matter with my students. I also teach coursework at the University level.
My approach is to encourage students to define their learning goals and then to discover how the learning the content can help them achieve their goals. I like to use real life examples to help students recall what they have learned. I am less interested in rote memorization. I tend to be structured and patient.
