I graduated with a degree in Physical Science Education, which gives me a strong background in Physical Sciences and in math. I have worked with children and youth of all age levels and nearly every ability. I ran an afterschool program for the Salvation Army, ran a boys home for troubled boys and worked in St. Paul City schools as a substitute teacher and a night teacher at an evening school. I also have worked six summers at a Salvation Army camp. Through these experiences I have worked with both gifted and special needs children and youth. I believe that all children have the capability to learn if someone is willing to be patient and work with them. I received my MA in Statistics from the University of Pittsburgh in December of 2008. Since then I have been giving private lessons in statistics to undergraduate and graduate students. I also have given lessons in high school level algebra. Prior to going to graduate school I was a substitute mathematics instructor at Wilkinsburg High School. Prior to working at Wilkinsburg, I was the Apangea Learning Math Instructor for Penn Hills High School. While at Penn Hills High School I worked with students in subjects from basic math to college prep calculus and test preparation for entrance exams. I also have experience working with teenagers at three different summer camps, one of these camps being the Penn Hills YMCA. I am also a professional musician and a statistical consultant. I taught Middle School band for 30 years in the public schools, followed by 9 years part-time at the respected Old Trail School in Bath, OH. My bands at Bolich Middle School in Cuyahoga Falls, OH received many "Outstanding" ratings at O.M.E.A. contests. I have also substituted in several local school districts for a wide variety of subjects, including Spanish and French. I have also tutored Spanish privately, and given private lessons on piano and flute. I always try to start from "where the student is" and build on from starting point. I believe in positive reinforcement and that anything worth having in life requires consistent effort. I frequently am told after a day of subbing, "Mr. Burns, you are the greatest sub ever!" My wife and I also still perform as musicians in local restaurants, including several Mexican restaurants where we perform many songs in Spanish.
