At Stonehill, I developed a love for teaching and helping students work through difficult problems until the material “clicks”. I have an enthusiasm for the sciences that comes through and from my own personal experiences, I know how much a teacher/mentor figure can make in a student’s life.I try to convey the material in multiple ways to make it more understandable and relatable. I believe in guiding students to the correct answer, even if it means going astray, rather than solving problems for them,as this allows for the development of independent thinking and learning. I am patient and dedicated and believe that education is critical and that everyone should have the chance to succeed at it.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am patient and believe that every child has the ability to learn. Not all children have the same learning style and I can adjust to ensure the child is gaining an understanding of the material and concepts. I prefer to be a coach and allow the student to discover on their own. I will provide examples and guidance but want the student to learn he or she can figure things out for themselves.
For most of my life I have had a passion for education and learning. Education opens up a world of opportunities. While studying for my bachelor’s degree in Mathematics I developed a love for the subject because of its order, logic, and simplicity. I earned a masters degree in Computer Science which afforded me the opportunity to learned extensive grammatical skills while writing research papers. As a senior member of many computer systems development projects I have mentored several junio ... read more

I personally can say that I have learned the most & can recall the most from those teachers that I consider my favorites. I believe it is because they knew how to inspire and motivate me to achieve what I thought I couldn’t or didn’t want to do. Those early experience is the inspiration behind the way I teach/tutor and write. I once heard it stated that ‘no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care’. I truly believe that you have to have a genuine interest in the individuals you are trying to inspire in order to make learning a possibility, especially in young children & adolescents. I also believe that in order to make a difference & be a positive influence; you really have to enjoy & have a passion for what you do

I believe in tailoring my teaching style to individual students that I tutor. The two most important techniques I have used are translating academic concepts into everyday examples that students can readily understand and using positive reinforcement to help them towards their goals. Especially in the fields of math and science, I have found that learning by analogy and real world examples provides the surest path towards success.

I take a creative approach to learning and cater to each student's unique learning style. I assess their knowledge base, and I make learning fun by explaining and developing ideas in a way they prefer and in a way they best learn from. I have a warm, caring personality, and I try to approach any set of challenges in a cheerful light. I also like to instill confidence within my students whenever possible. For instance, the student and I work together through problems giving them a greater sense of ownership of their knowledge and abilities, in comparison to just being told the answer.

A Little Bit About Me...

Most math education is pure calculation. This is important, but becomes tedious. Many children can’t learn like a computer and thus lose interest or struggle. My approach is different. I focus on logic and fundamentals because all of mathematics is logically built on a very simple foundation that anyone can understand. This foundation is necessary but often neglected. I believe I can build this foundation in anyone. Mathematics also has a lot of interesting history, and I know a lot of stories. A well placed story of humanity is often emotionally helpful. Overall I foster a relaxed environment, but never too relaxed. This is mathematics after all, the most rigorous academic discipline. But rigor will be a result instead of a prerequisite.

I studied education at Montclair State University for 4 years but I have a always been a teacher. From leadership roles in high school to corporate training, I have a talent for being able to boil subjects down to their basics and provide true understanding. My strongest subjects are Math, Music, and Literature. I can also do work in Science, English and Humanities/Social Studies.
I teach people to learn and find answers on their own. I guide the student through exercises in any field and try to avoid straight memorization by putting the subject is some kind of context. I keep up with current trends and technology and can use that to aid in relationships and teaching.

I have found that the best way to teach math is through analogy and real world examples. I prefer to teach general as opposed to specific methods, as these are more widely applicable. However general methods appear to be best taught through specific examples and with a great deal of patience. I am also a great fan of student encouragement as nothing can be done by the student if hey lack the necessary confidence.
I have been tutoring physics, mathematics and chemistry at the college for Naugatuck Valley Community for the past six years. I have tutored all levels of math through real analysis ad differential equations ad all levels of undergraduate physics. I love what I do and have a great gift for explanation. Tutoring requires, beyond a thorough understanding of the subject matter, an ability to empathize with the student and take the fear out of something new and possibly ... read more

Math can be fun, especially when applied to exciting applications. For my work at NASA and the MITRE Corporation I use concepts from Calculus I-II almost everyday. Inspiring students to become excited about math and science is one of my life-long goals. Step by step visual diagrams can be effective tools for describing complex ideas. From my experience as a teacher and student I have had great success creating simple graphics to accompany otherwise dense math equations for circuits, data structures and statistics. This teaching style coupled with a fresh knowledge of math material as a graduating senior make me confident that I can be an asset to your team this summer. I will be returning to my home in Connecticut May 18th and would welcome the opportunity to and discuss starting work at Advanced Learners!
