I tutored peers in different levels of math in high school, worked in a first grade classroom my junior year helping the teacher with spelling, reading and math. I volunteered in a preschool in all the ages of classrooms and helped with arts and crafts, letter practice with the older age groups and reading with all the ages. A Little Bit About Me...

Since graduating from Eastern Oregon University, a college known for its education programs, I have dedicated most of my adult life to teaching. I have a BS degree in secondary education with endorsements in advanced mathematics and health education. I have taught students in various settings throughout my career and have become able to adapt to different learning environments. I have taught students in grades 7 through 12 as well as adult learners preparing to earn a GED certificate. I remember my first tutor in junior high. He helped me gain an understanding beyond just the numbers and the formulas. From his example, I started tutoring friends as a sophomore in high school. I always try to be very patient and supportive when I'm tutoring. I am a strong believer in the Socratic method of teaching, which from my understanding, means asking the student questions regarding what they already know about a concept in order to customize the lesson and/or "lead" them to the answer. I also try to use analogies and real life examples that are tailored according to the interests of my student. For example, if my student is interested in sports, then I try to use sports analogies and examples to describe difficult concepts. I have been an elementary school teacher for nearly 18 years. I taught for 7 years in Elk Creek and 10 years in Los Molinos where I currently teach 2nd and 3rd grade. I earned Glenn County Teacher of the Year in 1998 and Tehama County Teacher of the Year in 2007. I was also named Glenn County Teacher of the Week for Channel 7 News in 1999. From 1992 to 1996 I trained in study skills for the History and Geology departments at Chico State through the Equity Services Office. This included a 3 hour training session each week in addition to tutoring individually and in groups for struggling college students. This was 4 of the greatest years ever!
