EXPERT TUTOR-MultiSubject; Home/ONLINE; +WRITING instructor

As a tutor, I find that it is important to present the material to the students in a way that they can relate to. My job as an educator is to teach them how to learn it and make them want to learn it. I personally do not believe that negative reinforcement is beneficial. Positive responses to students are extremely valuable, even if they may occasionally give the wrong answer. This will give them the motivation to do well. My philosophy is that teaching is part knowledge, part communication, and part intuition. My intuition is necessary to understand where a student is getting stuck. I myself already understand the material; the challenge is to understand why a student does not. A variety of communicative teaching approaches is best. I have learned that different students respond to visual, auditory, or tactile methods. As always, continuous practice is extremely important. I also must ... read more

My comments on tutoring Government : Highly qualified k-8

Constructivist, multi-sensory, inquiry-based.
For 20 years I worked for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, as a fifth through 7th Grade classroom teacher. I taught all of the academic subjects in various combinations, sometimes all at once to a self-contained class. The State of Tennessee recognized me as "Highly Qualified" in all subjects, from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. I served on the district's math council for 5 years, helped direct the district's science fair one year, and worked extensively in the field of arts-based curriculum development. I also was trained in the IB curriculum, and implemented it for 10 years.

I am currently completing my final year at Vanderbilt Law School. Over the past three years, I have taught a class and provided one-on-one tutoring for students preparing to take the LSAT. I also taught an upper level course while in grad school (it was in radio production). While I was in undergrad, I spent time tutoring elementary and middle school aged children over the internet. All together, I have helped dozens of individual students in a private setting and nearly a hundred students in the classroom. Personally, I love numbers and have always been very comfortable with math. But my grades and test scores have always been just as strong in other subjects, and I am confident that I can help you or your child in any of the areas listed below.

More About This Tutor...

As the daughter of educators, I have been exposed to the education system all my life. As a result of this exposure, I became very interested in tutoring and teaching. I taught for two years as a substitute teacher before attending law school. I previously worked as a substitute teacher with Morrow Elementary in North Lauderdale, Florida where I taught test-taking strategies for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Most recently, I have volunteered with Youth Encouragement services as a tutor.
Based on previous experience I have discovered that the same teaching style does not work for every child. I find that explaining each topic and asking the child question gives a clear indication of their understanding. Based on responses to the questions adjustments may be made to address each child's need.

Learning is a lifelong adventure in pursuit of truth. In following the example of Socrates, a teacher must realize that the wisest among us are those who are keenly aware of their own lack of knowledge. It is not a coincidence that eager learners make the best teachers. Because education is primarily concerned with the development of human beings, it cannot ignore the fundamental importance of personal relationships. I believe that an effective teacher must carefully analyze the personality, attitudes, and goals of students in order to better understand how to motivate and communicate with them. The most effective way to stimulate learning is not through providing more and more data, but rather by developing a personal and unique approach that reaches students where they are. A teacher should seek to follow the example of effective mentoring demonstrated by the great Teachers of the pas ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Most high school students don't get the chance to teach their own geometry classes. With our teacher in the back of class, I lectured from the book, guided my peers’ board work, and answered their questions. Since then I have incorporated training and education in everything that I do. As a manger in two very different industries, I succeeded in delivering exceptional production and service by training my teams and giving them opportunities to become accountable for their performances. While a graduate sociology student, I jumped at the special invitation to adjunct for a semester in addition to my teaching assistant duties and found it to be even more rewarding than I imagined. During both of my graduate programs, I found that guiding study sessions and offering a variety of tutoring assistance and training (such as three languages, history, philosophy, fitness) became central to my suc ... read more

I believe that when a student does not do well in school, it is not because that student cannot learn. Different teaching methods speak to different students, and sometimes a student simply needs a fresh and alternative introduction to subject material. My job as a tutor is to find the teaching method that speaks most clearly to my student. By being patient, precise, persistent, and knowledgeable, I know I can help my student reach his/her academic goals.
My excellent writing skills, ACT score of 35, and passion for academics got me into Vanderbilt University, from which I acquired my BA in 2009. I studied every subject I could but found most pleasure in political science and sociology. In addition to these fields, I have expertise in grammar, essay composition, and a variety of creative arts. I also have teaching knowledge of the basic maths and sciences. Overall, I have about thr ... read more

Teaching is a very holistic activity. I spent the last year and a half working with at-risk kids in a wilderness setting as a Counselor/Teacher. Essentially, I had 8-10 home-schooled children under my care in a therapeutic environment set up for experiential education. I quickly discovered that it is very hard to teach children without first understanding them as individuals. My goal as a tutor was and is not simply the transference of information but also the transference of self-confidence to children that, if cultivated, will last a lifetime and enable children to tackle any educational or life obstacle.
My college education was very self driven and self propelled. I received three academic scholarships throughout my college career and maintained a 3.84 GPA for the entire four years. At the close of my four years, I earned a BS is History, giving me a particularly good foundatio ... read more

I enjoy working with students and showing them the joy of learning. I believe that children learn most in small groups and one on one environments. I believe that children learn best when they feel respected. I think that everyone has skills and talents to offer. I try to help my students find their own gifts and work to allow them to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
I hold a bachelor's degree in Political Science, which focused on writing and research. I earned an alternative teaching certification, which allowed me to work as an inclusion teacher at the middle school level, which allowed me to spend a great deal of time working with small groups and in one on one settings. I have taught life sciences, Earth sciences, world geography, and United States history. I also have a year's experience of tutoring beginning reading.

My own experience as a student has shown me that i was most effectively motivated when I realized the enjoyment I could draw from schoolwork. Approached in the right way, all aspects of the educational experience -- lecture, class discussion, and even test-taking and essay-writing -- can be fun when the student saw these activities as opportunities to challenge themselves. Many enjoy athletics because it tires and strengthens the body; as a tutor, I have found that I can impart similar enjoyment through the exercise and strengthening of the mind.
I first began tutoring during high school, volunteering with Time to Rise in Nashville, TN, a program that supplies students from underperforming schools with supplemental education. After high school, I excelled during college at the University of the South, spending time in Oxford at St Catherine's College, graduating summa cum laude, an ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have tutored for over ten years. I began this work in my undergraduate years at Mercer University where I was employed as a writing/grammer/ESL tutor through the university learning center. I also worked as a tutor through Mercer with the NCAA CHAMPS program for student athletes. While at graduate study at Vanderbilt University, I was employed as a teaching assistant. I tutored individual students on writing style and grammar for academic essays. I have tutored students in my spare time for years as a source of extra income and through volunteer projects.
I love to teach, and I have taught many subjects. I have worked with students in art, french, English, and art history. Each subject and each student requires a different approach, and I enjoy rising to this challenge. I enjoy witnessing my students' success. In college, I specifically tutored student athletes who were in da ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Because I have an extensive background in Psychology, I have a strong understanding of the learning process, as well as many other factors that affect it. I focus on each individual child's strengths and use that to bring their weaknesses up to a higher level. Through patience and encouragement, I believe that most children can experience dramatic improvements in their abilities. I am able to explain complex ideas clearly, in simple terms that are understandable. Then I expand on what the child already understands until they have mastered the more advanced concepts. I greatly enjoy the excitement, challenge, and reward of enriching a child's life through education.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Southern Illinois University. This gives me a broad knowledge base in many educational arenas. I have tutoring experience with the program "Second Chance Saturdays" fo ... read more
