A Little Bit About Me...

Writing is thinking. If I can get my students to think, I can get them to write better. We sit down with interesting texts, thought-provoking texts, and figure out what the author was trying to say and how. Then we try to do the same thing ourselves. Part of that is learning the rules of grammar, but I value those only because they let me and my students say what we mean. My classes focus on getting what we mean onto the page, and making that as interesting as possible to the writer and the reader.
After twenty-five years in book and magazine publishing, I decided to do something that mattered, so I went back to school, got a master's degree, and began teaching. Of course, that does not mean learning isn’t work; but part of growing up – and selecting a career – is learning that work can be enjoyable. I should mention that it is not my way to enforce memorization for the sake of it. If you understand concepts, that is much better. I always say “an example is the embodiment of a rule”. As the daughter of educators, I have been exposed to the education system all my life. As a result of this exposure, I became very interested in tutoring and teaching. I taught for two years as a substitute teacher before attending law school. I previously worked as a substitute teacher with Morrow Elementary in North Lauderdale, Florida where I taught test-taking strategies for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Most recently, I have volunteered with Youth Encouragement services as a tutor.
Based on previous experience I have discovered that the same teaching style does not work for every child. I find that explaining each topic and asking the child question gives a clear indication of their understanding. Based on responses to the questions adjustments may be made to address each child's need.
