I enjoy teaching students of all ages, individually or in groups. I find the Socratic method most useful, and with children this translates into making the subject (i.e. German grammar) seem like a puzzle that, with some effort, can be solved. I think students are best served when they can discover these answers for themselves.
I have a BA in English and a Master's and Ph.D. in German (Germanic Linguistics). I have taught English literature as a substitute in junior and senior high schools, college level German, linguistics, English reading and writing and English as a Second language. I will be a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Superior in just a few short weeks with my degree in English and Communications. With grammar and mechanics, I have found that a directive manner is often the best approach; sometimes, however, students require clarification of ideas and organization, in which case I pose questions and share observations, rather than instruct. With reading assignments, clarification of thesis, organization, and vocabulary are usually most helpful. I really do place something of a premium on being able to connect with all of my students on an academic and personal level. I believe that this helps them as they know that their teacher and tutor cares about them and their future and, as such, this causes them to grow and excel. I can attest to such things happening with many of my students and for that I am incredibly thankful.
I have done a lot of teaching and tutoring, both with adults and young people. Most of my experience, though, comes from working with high school and junior high school students. I spent the majority of that time as a tutor/ mentor and would work with the students one on one or in small groups, both in the library or in the classroom. I became interested in tutoring during my three years of graduate study at Princeton Theological Seminary. Studying theology in my undergraduate and graduate work required me to invest strongly in multiple subjects such as history, philosophy, languages, politics and literature. Every child learns differently. In a world where we corporately streamline everything so that it all comes out pre-packaged and exactly the same we often lose sight of how unique each person is. I find that listening carefully to a child's reasons for having difficulty can help you to better understand how to help them learn.
