A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BA in English and a Master's and Ph.D. in German (Germanic Linguistics). I have taught English literature as a substitute in junior and senior high schools, college level German, linguistics, English reading and writing and English as a Second language. I have taught and tutored children and adult learners. My teaching experience has been in Germany, California and Minnesota. I also tutored ACT/SAT in Minnesota.
I enjoy teaching students of all ages, individually or in groups. I find the Socratic method most useful, and with children this translates into making the subject (i.e. German grammar) seem like a puzzle that, with some effort, can be solved. I think students are best served when they can discover these answers for themselves.

I am in the Education field to make a difference in student’s lives. I hope to do this through instruction and example. I believe these two elements intertwined and essential for any educator. I am value the “Teacher as facilitator” education model. Today, I classify my teaching style as a constructivist theory with humanist elements. I believe that a combination of these three models will ensure the greatest amount of learning for students as I prepare them for further education. In my experience, working with at-risk, failing, or youth in general requires a level of acceptance from the student. Educators cannot reach that level if they talk down to their students. I feel I am able to bridge that gap and reach students on a personal level.

I will be a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Superior in just a few short weeks with my degree in English and Communications. I will be moving to Champlin just after the first of the year and am looking to continue tutoring.
Being overwhelmed with information that is just not making sense can be frustrating and most teachers don't have the time to give individual attention to each student. One thing I have learned in my many years as a tutor is that each student is unique. I try to be flexible in my approach. With grammar and mechanics, I have found that a directive manner is often the best approach; sometimes, however, students require clarification of ideas and organization, in which case I pose questions and share observations, rather than instruct. With reading assignments, clarification of thesis, organization, and vocabulary are usually most helpful. Overall, I try to be as student-centered as possible in my approach to tutoring, without sacrificing a commitment to high quality instruction.
