A Little Bit About Me...

As cliché as this sounds - my favorite part of teaching is the satisfaction of knowing I made a difference. I have interacted with individuals across countless backgrounds and understand the idea of each student needing to hear things in their own terms. The simple concept penetrates through my patient teaching style. Some of my favorite ways to connect with students is to create simple analogies using subjects which interest them. My overall personable nature makes it easy for students to talk to me and I can always be counted on for advice (whether it be academic or otherwise).

A Little Bit About Me...

For the past five years, I have worked in Minnesota as a Technical Writer for a small healthcare company and informally tutored family members and friends. From January, 1993 through August, 2000 I taught Writing: 115, 121, and 122, Portland, Oregon's Community College English Compostition sequence. My students composed essays which supported a thesis statement through structure appropriate to both thesis and audience. Students learned to revise thoughtfully at all stages of the writing process, focus on developing expository and critical writing skills, and to synthesize, integrate and document sources used to support and sustain an argumentative thesis statement. A Little Bit About Me...

I have done a lot of teaching and tutoring, both with adults and young people. Most of my experience, though, comes from working with high school and junior high school students. I spent the majority of that time as a tutor/ mentor and would work with the students one on one or in small groups, both in the library or in the classroom. It was really the most wonderful experience and I was able to provide tremendous benefits to the students on both an academic and personal level.
I really do place something of a premium on being able to connect with all of my students on an academic and personal level. I believe that this helps them as they know that their teacher and tutor cares about them and their future and, as such, this causes them to grow and excel. I can attest to such things happening with many of my students and for that I am incredibly thankful.

A Little Bit About Me...

Every child learns differently. In a world where we corporately streamline everything so that it all comes out pre-packaged and exactly the same we often lose sight of how unique each person is. I find that listening carefully to a child's reasons for having difficulty can help you to better understand how to help them learn. I find that children are often given too little credit - especially children with special needs. All children can be more than the world expects them to be. I just enjoy helping them realize that.
My degree in psychology has enabled me to understand all children better, and to work especially well with special needs students. I have experience tutoring students from the ages of 3 to 40+. My teaching experiences include teaching in the regular elementary classroom and in the special education classroom. In addition, I was a reading resource teacher and Title I reading teacher. For the past two years I worked as a Minnesota Reading Corps K-3 Literacy Tutor.

Here is Some Good Information About Florida Writes Tutoring

The Florida Writing Assessment was implemented in grades 4, 8, and 10 as required by a law passed by the 1990 legislature. Does your student need a tutor? Beginning in 2010, each essay was scored by one rater. In previous years, two raters were used and the scores were averaged. Prior to 2010, a student could have received a half-point score, such as 4.5; whereas since 2010, no half-point scores are possible. Additionally, beginning in 2010, each student within the same grade level was required to write an essay using the same mode of writing (narrative, expository, or persuasive).
