Since then I have earned a bachelor's degree in finance and economics with ambitions to earn a PhD. During my undergraduate experience I tutored beginning accounting students for a couple hours a week aside from the usual work of helping classmates. For the past five years, I have worked in Minnesota as a Technical Writer for a small healthcare company and informally tutored family members and friends. From January, 1993 through August, 2000 I taught Writing: 115, 121, and 122, Portland, Oregon's Community College English Compostition sequence. My students composed essays which supported a thesis statement through structure appropriate to both thesis and audience. Students learned to revise thoughtfully at all stages of the writing process, focus on developing expository and critical writing skills, and to synthesize, integrate and document sources used to support and sustain an argumentative thesis statement. I really do place something of a premium on being able to connect with all of my students on an academic and personal level. I believe that this helps them as they know that their teacher and tutor cares about them and their future and, as such, this causes them to grow and excel. I can attest to such things happening with many of my students and for that I am incredibly thankful.
I have done a lot of teaching and tutoring, both with adults and young people. Most of my experience, though, comes from working with high school and junior high school students. I spent the majority of that time as a tutor/ mentor and would work with the students one on one or in small groups, both in the library or in the classroom. Florida Writes is an assessment of writing proficiency which incorporates the assessment of higher order skills, since students are required to generate and develop the ideas that form the basis for their written responses.
