Education Should Be An Experience!

I have been teaching at the University, Community College, High School, and Middle School levels for over twenty years now. My experience has been diverse and has been in front of diverse students. Your age, gender, ethnicity, nationality, religious persuasion, etc. are what make you so unique and what I find exciting in teaching/tutoring you! Throughout these past two decades, I have encountered so many different types of thinkers, learners, people, etc., and I consider each experience to have been a mutually rewarding and educational time (After all, we are lifelong learners, who should find growth in everything in which we engage.). Accordingly, I have enjoyed teaching a wide array of courses. which make me capable of tutoring several content areas. My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have a Masters in Poetry from the University of Michigan, where I was awarded a Zell Postgraduate Fellowship and was a semi-finalist for the Thoerdore Roethke Hopwood Award. My collection of poems, Point of Sand, was awarded the Michigan Writers Chapbook Award in 2009. In addition to spending my summers on the Creative Writing Faculty at the Interlochen Center for the Arts where I teach high school poetry majors, I currently teach in the English department at the University of Michigan.

I received my Masters in Poetry from the University of Michigan in 2011, where I was awarded a Zell Postgraduate Fellowship, and where I currently teach in the English Department. This will be my 6th summer on the Creative Writing Faculty at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, where I world primarily with high school poetry majors. I have a chapbook (Michigan Writers Associated Press. 2009), and have publications in journals such as The Dunes Review and The Smoking Poet.
I had a wonderful teacher once who quoted a line from a Richard Brautigan book that went, "My teachers could easily have ridden with Jessie James for all the time they stole from me." He told us about making a promise to himself, when he began teaching, that he would never be the sort of teacher a student could say this about. I made the same promise when I began teaching. I have been blessed with some tremen ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BS in Psychology, and I have experience tutoring college students through an honors position as a Writing Fellow through Jackson Community College. I have studied, worked with, and helped publish various forms of writing. These forms include scientific journal articles (APA) and analytic essays (MLA). They also include creative forms of writing such as narrative essays, fiction, and poetry. In addition to extensive experience with composition, I have volunteered for athletic coaching, piano tutoring, guitar tutoring, and music theory tutoring.
I have a peer tutoring teaching style. My goal is for the tutee to achieve success both independently and through his or her communication with others. For this to develop, I focus my efforts toward empathy and proceed to learn with the tutee. I have the knowledge to challenge the tutee with advanced objectives, and I have the respon ... read more

I believe strongly in providing children an opportunity to learn material in a way that will resonate with them personally. Throughout my education leading to a dual Master's Degree I have been able to learn a wealth of information about tailoring information to meet individual learning styles. I have experience in a variety of subject areas such as: math, statistics, reading, writing, social sciences (psychology, sociology, political science). Additionally, I have provided private lessons for multiple students that play brass instruments.
I love working with all children, and all age groups. I am here to help find a unique way to present the material to your child to help them understand it in language that they can understand. More About This Tutor...

I am a graduate of Ohio University with a bachelor's degree in English. In addition to studying English I also studied fine arts (painting, drawing, art history) and Spanish. My reading and grammar skills are helpful in all subjects because I am able to take apart sentences and paragraphs so that it is easier for students to understand. With my English background I am very helpful with reading assignments and book reports. I can help students with writing and editing papers as well as recognizing plot, themes, and motifs in stories, novels, and poems.
