I am the author of five historical novels and a number of articles, poems and short stories. I occasionally do short “residences” teaching Language Arts and Drama to special needs students in k-12 schools for VSA Arts of Florida. My graduate studies emphasized American and Tudor/Stuart History. My doctorate included a Criminal Justice minor. I regularly teach writing and grant writing seminars to adults, usually through libraries on weekends or in the evening. I believe everyone will respond well to individualized instruction when the tutor studies the student's learning style and offers the information in the form best suited to each learner. I am patient and encouraging with students. I work hard to find ways to present a subject so that each learner will find it interesting.

I have taught both children and adults private piano lessons. I taught history and other subjects for 2 1/2 years as a daily and long-term substitute teacher in secondary schools. For one year I directed a public library story-time program for preschool children. I worked two years as a middle school Library Media instructor. I wrote curriculum and taught computer literacy for four years in a prison GED program. My undergraduate and graduate degrees conferred honors. I believe children want to learn, if it is done with humor and patience. It just takes the time and effort to find the way that works best. I am a person that wants every child to succeed and will work to find the best way for your child. Even though I received my B.A. in Criminal Justice, I am knowledgeable in several other areas of study. In addition, I have learned extensive grammatical skills due to writing research papers and laboratory reports, along with essays because of my interest in other various fields of study.

I like to help students connect with the subject we are working with. It is very difficult to help a student who is uninterested or unfocused. I like to find out what interest them and apply that to the subject. It is so gratifying to see a that moment when a student "gets it". I graduated with a bachelors in Communication. I have 4 years experience in forensics speaking. I was a competitor in speech and debate and a national gold medalist. I was a tutor my Jr. and Sr. year for the University of Southern Mississippi Athletic department in English, Theater History, and Reading. I currently help coach the TCC forensics team and assistant direct for a Christian School Drama Department.

My personal philosophy is to let children make their own discoveries. I am essentially a person that will guide a student to that discovery and ask questions all along the way to activate their brain in terms of problem solving. In my experience, a child will have a stronger retention of subject matter if they are allowed to discover it and understand it on their own terms. I am also a believer in bringing a child's confidence level up, as many children give up before they even start a project because of low self confidence. Simply by encouraging the child to believe in his/ her capabilities, I will increase the productivity of the session and build a relationship on trust and mutual respect.
