Experienced Math & Science Tutor

I believe that all children should have the opportunity to learn in a way that is best for them. Every person is different, and that includes the methods they use to learn. I know that the best way to really gain knowledge of something is to have it presented in a manner that is best suited to the individual. Because of that, I am committed to teaching with the individual in mind.
After college graduation, I taught Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, Earth Science, Biology and Chemistry for one year at a private school in Fresno, CA. I also taught Algebra in summer school to students that required more of a smaller, one on one environment to learn. During this time, I earned my California teaching certifica ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching comes easy to me because I was taught very well. In high school I was the president of the FTA club where we would go to local elementary and middle schools to educate children of all educational capacity and mental handicaps. Patience is a valuable skill I had to develop early on, as well as many others, in working with children. My teaching method is to first take the teaching subject(s) and break them down into correlating groups. Then I would see how I would explain that to someone who knows absolutely nothing about the subject. Then explain the material in a slow and efficient manner and repeat if necessary. I love working with children, young adults, and adults.
I achieved the Eagle Scout Award in the Boy Scouts of America program and was selected by American Legion Post to attend North Carolina Tarheel’s Boy’s State in the summer of 2000. I graduated from the Univ ... read more

I like to work through each type of problem step by step creating a blue print of what the student should be doing to solve each type of problem. I then repeat this with another problem of the same type. I like to go through every type of problem like this while they write the steps of how to do the problem down and then try to solve each problem step by step. I like to emphasize that they write neatly so they can see clearly what they are doing and what they have done so they can quickly go back through the problem and check for mistakes.
I have recently graduated from UNCW with a BS degree in chemistry. I have taken mainly math and science classes for the past three years. I have participated in many study groups and helped many other students who were in math and science classes by tutoring them.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching has allowed me to personally understand the unique learning styles of individual learners as they face the challenges of standardized testing, a rigorous curriculum, and their social development. Teaching is not only a education of academics, it is the teaching of social, behavioral and academic development. We must understand their interests and what motivates the learner to excel in and outside of the classroom. Learners that are capable of understanding their own capabilities make it possible for the learner to participate in the learning process.
As a student in high school, I was intrigue by the concepts of math and science. I entered college seeking more knowledge in these subject areas. I received a BS in Chemistry in 1999 and later decided in my life that I wanted to share my passion of the subject areas with others. This is when I decided to pursue a teaching ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Coming to this country and be able to go to school is very important for me, and i found it very difficult seeing many children not able to go to school because they have not motivation, even if they have the opportunity to go to school and be what they want.I believe education is very import in the 21st century and everybody should go to school and learning new experience and explore the different opportunity available for them, so i would like to help students learn about the value of education and help them gain the knowledge they need to have a bright future.

More About This Tutor...

I believe educating is a matter of connecting with students in order to learn how to break down complex concepts so they can understand. It really is a challenge I love and I get a great deal of satisfaction when I see that eureka moment. I believe the reason that some people do not enjoy science is that they never had a teacher who was excited about making these concepts accessible. Discoveries can be made by the student when the educator finds the "keystone" principal that ties all the information together.
I received my BS in Biology from UNCW and for the last 15 years I have been an Environmental Chemist. Now, I am pursuing my true calling as an educator. I love teaching all grades and levels. The most important aspect of teaching is to know your student. Each individual learns in different ways, some are tactile learners, some are visual, and some are auditory learners. Incorporating all aspects into my teaching style assists the retention of the material. It also has to be relatable to the student, so we have to use relevant examples that they understand. All children can learn any subject if you can spark their interest. There is no better feeling than seeing the light turn on and the sense of accomplishment in a child's eyes.
I have completed all courses for my Associates Degree and was a trainer at my previous position. When in high school, I was a college preparatory student and graduated with a high school Diploma as well as 12 Advanced Placement courses and completed my International Baccalaureate diploma.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always enjoyed transferring knowledge to either a single student or an audience. It is a wonderful feeling knowing that you were able to provide information that was perceived as valuable. With respect to teaching/tutoring, I am patient, probing, and respectful. I see my goal as a tutor as (1) to identify the specific needs of the student, (2) to ensure that these needs have been addressed for that subject, and (3) to ensure the student gained confidence in their ability to be tested in all areas of that subject. I have found that I am most effective when working 1 on 1 or with small groups.
