Originally trained as a teacher of Drama and English, I subsequently spent many years working in the theatre, not only in educational situations but also as an actor, director and writer. I am now semi-retired, but still enjoy working as a teacher, and I currently teach animation and drama. I would welcome the opportunity to do some tutoring in language skills.
I have always found that the first and often most important thing a teacher can do is find the obstacles to learning that we all suffer from and seek ways to remove them. These may be the so called "blocks" that may develop after negative early experiences, preconceptions about the subject, or simply lack of confidence. Replacing resistance with enthusiasm and interest, and then providing expert guidance can then lead to acheivement.

A Little Bit About Me...

My philosophy has always been, "make it interesting and they will learn." However, what is interesting to you and I may not be interesting to the next person. Therefore, I listen to the child and figure out their learning style and interests. Only then can I properly teach and know they understand the subject matter. It is always exciting to see a Childs face when something clicks and they have that, "I understand what she is talking about moment."
Having taught high school in both affluent and underprivileged areas I strive to make sure that every student has a positive learning experience. My degree is a BS in Communication/Business with a minor in education. Language has always been my first love and I continue to take classes related to this field. The past few years I have worked in sales but I continue to tutor.

I understand that any child can run into problems with schoolwork. I try to find out why the child is having a problem before trying to help them. Did he miss something and fall behind? Is she simply bored with the subject? The approach I take with the child depends on the answers to these questions. I feel it is important for the learner to understand that there is a reason for making the effort to learn each subject. In math, I like to assign the numbers and equations to subjects the learner likes, such as pizza, sports or music, for example. I also find it is beneficial to make references to the different careers one might use the knowledge learned in the child's classes.
