I started tutoring students middle and high school prior to graduating college. I have taught part-time college students at various institutions since 1996. I enjoy teaching any age student, but more than that I get satisfaction when that student attains their goal. I believe in using the Socratic method of teaching and allowing the student to get their own answers rather than just telling them. I seek ... read more

Teacher with gentle touch - Very good at explaining new subj

Web manager and usability analyst as well as instructor. I have been asked at various jobs to teach training classes to my peers because of my ability to deliver an easy to understand lesson. I've been told I am very good at explaining a topic that someone has no experience with at all. I am on contract with NC States Computer Training Unit.
I try to find the teaching style that is going to work for the student. Are they visual? Do they need to touch to learn? Finding out how to teach them and then helping them learn skills for independent study are just as important as the material.

I graduated from Mount Union College in May 2006 with a BA in History and a double minor in Adoloescent to Young Adult Education and American Studies. Throughout high school I was a teacher's assistant helping with students in class during my study halls as well as working one on one with students for extra study skills. In the past few years I have tutored students in elemtary math, middle school reading and writing, and even my own students before and after school in social studies. I currently teach Civics and Economics which is an EOC course and I have taught this for 6 years now. Throughout those 6 years I have been able to successfully teach my students how to pass standardized tests and overcome testing anxiety.

I believe all children can do well at school if they are taught correctly. Every child learns differently and it is the job of the teacher to find the style that works for the student. Some students use verbal cues to learn while others visual, hands on or a variety of other approaches. The better we teach the children today the b ... read more

My experience began as a tutor in college and upon graduating I taught eighth grade science, high school sciences (biology, physical and earth), community college level biology (I and II) and biotechnology. I have a MS in Biology (research/thesis and study focus in biochemistry) and have tutored students in mathematics and English. I have experience teaching exceptional children (TBI, ADD, ADHD, BD, AG or GT) and volunteered with Head Start for years.
As a tutor my initial focus is identifying the students strengths and applying them when addressing areas where the student has a deficit. It is important to motivate the student in order to give confidence in their ability to face academic challenges. The key is to establish or enhance the foundation of student learning by developing a positive relationship with developing dependency. It is also important that the student develo ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In my last year of college I chose to complete my field placement research project at an accelerated junior high school for low income families. At this school I was in charge of the after-school science club. I helped the adolescents learn aspects of science they wouldn't learn in the classroom. We also competed at a state Science Olympic competition. I was also in charge of after-school homework centers as well as a science and math tutor.
I love teaching adolescents. I think it is very fulfilling to watch a child obtain knowledge. I have a very hands-on teaching style. I like to work through all the problems and questions that the children have. I pride myself on using unique examples to explain complex problems and concepts.

As an educator, I am not primarily concerned with what skill level one may be at at one particular time or another. What concerns me most is the student's willingness to try and I feel that that is harvested through a teacher's patience, encouragement, guidance, support and a willingness to try new approaches. I also feel that a positive attitude is one of the most valuable assets a teacher/tutor can bring to child's day.
As a Physical Education and Health Education teacher, I have come to appreciate that all children operate in various ways. Some pick up on material sooner than others, while there are still those who are in need of support. In my tutoring experience, which has been a very positive experience, I have created various learning tools so that my students may achieve their maximum potential. Prior to settling into a Phys. Ed. career, I was also an English major who ... read more

Teaching to me is about relating the information to the students in a way they can understand. It is very important to make the material relevant to their lives somehow. Therefore it is important to get to know your students and their hobbies and interests. Another key thing needed to teach is patience. You cannot expect them to race through anything. Everyone has their own pace. It is also important to make the information interesting and entertaining to some extent, Especially for younger students. Sometimes an educational game is just as good at getting the information across but at the same time engages the students and keeps them interested.
I have been tutoring since I was 13 years old. Parents of my peers always approached me to teach their son or daughter. After I completed high school with a 4.0 GPA I was hired at a professional tutoring school. There I worked fo ... read more

I am a graduate of North Carolina State University. I believe that my Computer Science degree, has prepared me to tutor students. At North Carolina State University, we took a variety of classes that made us well rounded. During the past 2 years, I have completed training to become a Substitute Teacher, and I had an opportunity to work for a few schools. I accepted most the assignments. They seemed to be pleased with my work ethic and my commitment to education.
My teaching style is very much hands on. I try to re-enforce what is being taught, to ensure that the student understands. Also, I like for the student to see the big picture, that each lesson is a stepping stone and that learning never ends.

I am very passionate about teaching and working with young people. I believe that creativity, patience, and excellent communication are vital to finding ways to help students learn and understand what they are learning. I believe that building a good relationship while maintaining an effective learning environment is also critical. Ultimately, I feel I am a good teacher because I respect all students and accept them positively and unconditionally.
While obtaining my Master's degree in Accounting, I worked as a Professor's Assistant which involved substitute teaching, research, and grading exams and homework. I have been teaching since 1990. I spent one year teaching English and Women's Studies at a private high school. At the college and high school level, I have taught dance which includes writing about dance, dance history, arts administration classes and theory classes. I also have extensive experience teaching and tutoring ESL students in the US and abroad.
I view teaching not only as an extension of my creative work, but also as a continuation of my research of composition and performance. A good teacher is like a skilled composer, arranging and presenting ideas, crafting and shaping an environment where a student can best be challenged, and learn to challenge themselves. I teach in much the same way as I improvise; I bring to each class, indeed each student, an openness, compassion and commitment to the present moment. I am charismatic and inspire a joy and excitement about ... read more

I enjoy working with children and was a Teaching Assistant in New York. My class was small so this gave me a chance to work one-on-one with the students in order to give each child the attention they needed. Some of my duties included preparing lesson plans as well as teaching the lessons to the special needs children. I enjoyed assisting the children with any questions they had and tutored them with their homework. I feel that I have a natural teaching ability and can be helpful to a child that needs assistance with their lessons.
I believe that children today need special attention when it comes to education. Unfortunately schools are often too crowded and the children that have alternative learning styles are often lost in the back. I enjoy sitting down with children and giving them the full attention that they deserve. It is important to recognize the learning style of ea ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always been interested in teaching. I have taught for a couple of months as a full-time teacher in Franklin County's Middle School. I have been doing part-time voluntary tutoring for the last three years teaching math, physics, chemistry, computers, and foreign language. I also participate in National Engineer's Week conducted by IBM in which engineers go to different middle and high schools and teach kids about the latest technology fields in engineering, and the importance of gaining a higher level of education.
I love to teach and I get excited when I help a student whose performance was bad before I started teaching him/her but significantly improved after I started teaching them. It is very enjoyable for me and currently I just do it voluntarily for part-time. However, the best thing I like about teaching is that you are shaping the future of young children and helpin ... read more
