A Little Bit About Me...

As a Purdue graduate, I was the recipient of the highest level of instruction in math and science. As an undergraduate I was named on the Dean’s list six times and was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. I have earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. In order to be granted this degree I was required to gain a great understanding in many areas of math and science. A Little Bit About Me...

Disregarding my history, ethics, and religion expertise, my main reason for applying is my confidence in my capabilities to teach English. Basic parts of speech, syntax, grammar, organization, rhetoric, and multiple genres--from correct usage to specialized purposes (such as academic papers, business, text for oral delivery) have been mastered. In terms of mathematics, I taught GED, which covered most basic functions; however, I am a humanities person. My preferences are in the areas where I have spent most of my time.
Genuine, personal interest in the child; establishing rapport; establishing the student's mastery level, then building from there (instead of an arbitrary line which creates anxiety); affirmation of every step of progress/success; recognition but careful use of errors in non-judgmental, constructive correction; ease in backing up for review when needed; positive ... read more

With experience and training in psychology and evaluation, I bring a unique approach to working with each child as an individual, quickly assessing learning style, making the most of strengths while coaxing the gradual improvement of what is more challenging. One thing I've learned is that all of us love doing what we are good at and success breeds more success so working with that success, tapping into your child's perception of self as learning, productive, and accomplishing whatever goals they set for themselves. Success breeds success and a good teacher creates an environment that begins at a nexus of challenge sufficient to excite and entertain while also possible. I believe that positive reinforcement is effective and discouragement can be avoided.
My experiences are extensive both academically and in real world applications which serve to bring what students learn and study ... read more

I convey to each student a never give up attitude and show confidence in their ability to understand the material. Each problem will be explained to the student and I will encourage every student to ask questions. After the student gains confidence in working problems together then I will have the student work a similar problem by themselves to confirm their level of understanding. After the student works the problem I will go over it and correct any mistakes in their work .

I believe in developing a holistic attitude towards each child and catering an individualized program based on their unique needs. Some children may truly only need help grasping a certain concept, but another may need help with homework, test anxiety or poor study habits. I have developed a variety of ways to help any child recognize their potential through a combination of strengthening their academic abilities while simultaneously improving their habits and attitude toward school work. I am also a strong believer in learning through a combination of interaction and traditional resource methods.
I have work with children in a non-profit/education/recreation capacity for nearly 10 years. I have formal education experience as a science teacher in both the middle school setting (2 years), and the high school setting (1 year). I also have 3 years of informal education experience that will help me connect with students. I worked as a science educator for three years at the Louisville Science Center, creating labs and demos on every science subject. Additionally, I have been a coach for 12 years, giving me the ability to motivate and break things down. My biggest attribute as a tutor will be my ability to “think outside the box”. I feel I have a knack for understanding how to reach individuals, and am very creative when trying to teach!
