I graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine with a BA in history and minors in biology and psychology. Earning a history degree required me to write several essays, including a thirty-page research paper, and this experience made me a better writer (and eventually, a better teacher). After graduating, I worked at a tutoring center for over a year, teaching English and history to K-12 students and math to K-6 students. Teaching styles are as diverse as students in the classroom. Given that fact, differentiated instruction is necessary because no two students learn alike. Building background, accessing prior knowledge, and learning student's frames of reference are important steps for a teacher to take in order to determine how a student learns. I have taught Medical Neuroanatomy to medical students at the University of Iowa Medical School. Students were directed in dissecting and identifying parts of the human brain. This occurred in small groups of five or six students. I also taught Molecular Neurobiology at Friday Harbor Laboratories to graduate students who came from around the world to take the course. This involved all parts of a laboratory class including lectures, small group discussions, and one-on-one teaching. I have also tutored numerous undergraduates in a variety of math and science areas.
My teaching style varies depending on the student. Perhaps my biggest asset is empathy as I can easily tell when a student (or group) gets it. I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. I went to school for the next year at the University of Kentucky, did not finish my degree, but earned enough credits to be hired by to teach in their Alternative School. I taught and was a leader and innovator at Cropper Alternative School for the next five years, until I decided to move to this part of the country after a recent divorce. Teaching English is such a delight! Having lived in a cross-cultural setting for several years and learned the native language, I understand remarkably well some of the frustrations and difficulties of learning a second language.
