I am believer in providing a bottom-up approach to mathematics. I first present a difficult problem to the student to find where their current level of expertise lies. Once I identify potential issues the student is having, I break the difficult problem into smaller problems which are easier to handle. I believe students need to start with easy problems, multiple examples, and heavy guidance. Then, I provide increasingly difficult problems until an abstract concept is obtained without my assistance. Adjuvant to demonstration, motivation and enthusiasm to learn the material must be taught. All the homework in the world cannot replace this! Regrettably, students often struggle due to poor instruction or vague textbooks which erode a student’s motivation. Fortunately this can be overcome with a little outside assistance.
