My comments on tutoring Organic Chemistry : Expert at all Organic Chemistry concepts. Partcularly good at breaking down the main concepts of structure and bonding, resonance, acid-base chemistry, alkanes, cycloalkanes, functional groups, stereochemistry, substitution and elimination reactions, alkenes and alkynes, alcohols, ethers, epoxides, and sulfides, as well as the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation of carbon-containing compounds, including not only hydrocarbons but also compounds with any number of other elements, including hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, halogens, phosphorus, silicon, and sulfur.

I am currently employed by a college in Roanoke, Virginia as a tutor of mathematics, chemistry, and computer science and tutor elementary school, middle school, high school, college students, and others professionally. For the last 23 years, it has been so fulfilling working for three colleges and tutoring independently over 2,000 students of all ages in all areas of math and computer science, as well as college writing, adult literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL). I really enjoy working with young teens. I have worked in high schools for 25 years in Virginia and West Virginia. I have always had good rapport with teens and have enjoyed interacting with them. I have been trained in the Constructivist approach to teaching, but have had to change my style of teaching in order to cover materials necessary for SOL testing in recent years. I know that students retain more knowledge when they are involved in discovering new information and would love to have the latitude to teach in that manner again. My goal in elementary school was to be a marine biologist from the first time I went to Sea World. It was not until my last semester of my undergrad that I decided to change directions for my career and enter the world of teaching. I was a lab assistant in college and tutored chemistry, organic, biology, trigonometry, etc. I draw much of my inspiration from a summer internship conducting whale research off the coast of New Hampshire. It was a priceless experience that I will never forget. It was also the most educational experience of my life, so far. I am in my second year of teaching 7th grade science and have no regrets in career choice. I believe science is a passion that has to be taught, not a subject.
