A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently completing my final year at Vanderbilt Law School. Over the past three years, I have taught a class and provided one-on-one tutoring for students preparing to take the LSAT. I also taught an upper level course while in grad school (it was in radio production). While I was in undergrad, I spent time tutoring elementary and middle school aged children over the internet. All together, I have helped dozens of individual students in a private setting and nearly a hundred students in the classroom. Personally, I love numbers and have always been very comfortable with math. But my grades and test scores have always been just as strong in other subjects, and I am confident that I can help you or your child in any of the areas listed below.

I have taught SAT prep courses for Kaplan Inc. since December 2012 and done a good deal of informal tutoring in Philosophy and French. I have a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy with a concentration in Neuroscience, and I also studied French for 7 years, including a semester in a language immersion program in the south of France (Aix-en-Provence), where I became fluent.
Very personal and tailored to the student. I have many suggestions about content and process of learning, but ultimately I want to give my students what THEY want and do what works best for them!

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always wanted to teach Math and have finally been able to take time off from full time work to obtain the required education to do so. I realize that many folks experience difficulty learning Math. In most cases, there are several ways to teach a particular concept. If one method does not click with a student, I will try another method until we find on that works. I also like to teach using practical examples that students may actually experience in their life to help students understand the value of learning math.

My teaching style varies with student learning styles. Although drill may be appropriate for some skills, my preference is project or problem based methods that draw on the learner's experiences and interests. I work from students' current skill levels, provide challenging problems, model successful learning skills, encourage students' to express creativity and intuition, and employ formative and normative assessments. I firmly believe that more advanced mathemtaics can be taught to younger and more diverse students. I believe that all students, of all skill levels, can learn mathemtaics if creatively taught.

I have always told my classes, "Learning can be fun; and if it's not, you may not be doing it right." Of course, that does not mean learning isn’t work; but part of growing up – and selecting a career – is learning that work can be enjoyable. I should mention that it is not my way to enforce memorization for the sake of it. If you understand concepts, that is much better. I always say “an example is the embodiment of a rule”. I am always committed to a student’s success; and will not let him or her give up. The biggest thrill in teaching is watching a student suddenly understand a concept. It happens frequently, and it never gets old.
For four years I taught in private schools, where I gave instruction at the middle and high school levels in English, French, Hebrew, computer programming, and office applications (spreadsheets, etc). I taught Math and English for one year at ... read more

I believe that when a student does not do well in school, it is not because that student cannot learn. Different teaching methods speak to different students, and sometimes a student simply needs a fresh and alternative introduction to subject material. My job as a tutor is to find the teaching method that speaks most clearly to my student. By being patient, precise, persistent, and knowledgeable, I know I can help my student reach his/her academic goals.
My excellent writing skills, ACT score of 35, and passion for academics got me into Vanderbilt University, from which I acquired my BA in 2009. In addition to these fields, I have expertise in grammar, essay composition, and a variety of creative arts. I also have teaching knowledge of the basic maths and sciences. The model of students as empty vessels filled by professors’ pontifications has too long prevented the former from accessing their full potential as learners. When students are given the trust and challenge to handle material maturely, they rise to the occasion. This may be through discussion, Q&A, or independent assignment, as long as the student is given the opportunity to excel. An educator's responsibilities are to find which method that best offers students the chance to use their unique skills to succeed and then to make subject material relevant to one’s daily life and future. This develops accountability, drive for further education, and development of the student’s own inherent talents. A student thus taught is more confident in their achievements and better prepared for life in the classroom and beyond.

A Little Bit About Me...

While in college, I have worked with numerous tutoring programs both paid and volunteering. I worked for two years as a tutor mentor for the Upward Bound Program, where I managed a group of 12 college students that tutored and mentored 75 low-income and first generation students in grades 9-12. Also while in college, I have have had the opportunity to work closely with numerous Metro Public Schools around the Nashville area. Currently I am working with the Martha O'Bryan Center at a Reading Achievement Program Tutor.
I believe that each child has its own learning style, therefore as a tutor you must be able to adapt quickly to the specific needs to every child. I think that the most important thing in tutoring is gaining the attention and confidence that you know what you are doing and talking about. I also live by the belief that repetition is the father of learning.
