Lawyer Turned Homeschooling Mom Can Make Learning Fun!

The key to successful teaching is to make it fun!
I have a law degree, but most of my experience comes from working with my own kids and spending hundreds of hours volunteering at their schools helping other children. I home schooled my children for 3 years for the middle school years and so I have experience motivating the surly teen who has no motivation to work as well as the young child that just wants to play. I also taught my children and many others how to read at very young ages and have perfected the technique for teaching children math and reading who love to move. One of my children had ADD and so I know how to work well with this issue. I also have a technique for teaching multiplication and math to very young children. You can see an example of the results of my work here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnBCQKn8wBs. The key is making everything FUN!!! This appl ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I was a full-time sixth grade teacher with the International Baccalaureate program for elementary, middle school students. I created a classroom environment that was conducive to learning, and independent study. Recognizing my capability and talent I was given the opportunity to teach math and computers to high school students and also science and computers to all grade levels. I volunteer at the Short Pump Elementary School as a Math Helper and I am very comfortable using the Promethean Board. Twice in 2 consecutive years I reached to the final round of awards as the best teacher of the year who showed innovation in teaching by the Intel. I developed plans that assisted students who required individual attention with reading and math skills, as well as independent learners. I created enriching curriculums and developed engaging classroom environments of learning and socializ ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

For just over a decade I have been involved in some form of peer education or mentoring. As a senior in high school, I tutored students in mathematics and science. As an ACS Certified Chemist, I have been exposed to upper level mathematics, chemistry and physics, but am still required to use writings skills in preparing various reports and papers. The opportunity to be a Teaching Assistant in upper-level chemistry and mathematics was rewarding and reinforcing at the same time. I have served in a variety of leadership roles, both academic and extra-curricular, that have shaped the person I am today.
The chance to tutor peers in high school was the initial spark towards considering education as a career. During my undergraduate studies the desire has grown as I was given the opportunity in the role of Teaching Assistant. I found from those experiences that I have an ability to gauge ... read more

More About This Tutor...

After watching a documentary on teachers teaching in the inner city, I decided to switch my major from Pre-Law to Elementary Education. I've always loved learning and I wanted to be able to convey that same message to my students. In college, I majored in Elementary Education with a minor in Psy. of the Exceptional Child. This minor allowed me to study children who are gifted and children with special needs. I am currently working on a Masters in Special Education because I've learned an extensive amount of knowledge on this subject working for the Early Intervention program in my area.
I've always believed that children learn by doing. I would rather have my students get real hands-on experience because concepts can be better attained and understood if children get real experience with it. I also believe that children learn differently from one another and a teacher should be able ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and working with both children and adults. I like to present subjects in an easy to understand format, gradually increasing the challenge of the material being covered. I believe in positive reinforcement and dialog with each student to uncover their "learning blocks". I teach students to fall in love with learning. After that is accomplished, the rest is easy!
I work part-time at the Richmond Times Dispatch. I have tutored in math for years and I love the subject as a whole. Having an Electrical Engineering degree, I am very good at math and know it well. My true love is training and coaching both children and adults.

My teaching style is very simple, but effective. I merely talk to the student to find out where he or she is having difficulty, and work to find ways to remedy the problem. I graduated from high school with honors from a school that never pushed the effectiveness of attending college to students. I maintained my focus and attended Virginia State University in the fall of 2006. My mother was my inspiration, so much that I ventured towards science as my field of study. I chose to be a chemist, allowing myself to go above and beyond the norm. I succeeded as I came upon the completion of my undergraduate studies and obtaining a BS in Chemistry. While finishing up my final semester, I was offered a tutoring position that would allow me to connect with underclassmen as well as my peers, not only with class work but aiding as a mentor to students as well.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style varies depending on the needs of each student. Because students learn in different ways, I feel it is important to start with a basic teaching method and evolve from there for each individual child and his or her level of learning. I feel that motivation goes a long way and that students should feel rewarded for any level of progress they accomplish.
My experience includes two years of full time teaching at the PreK level. I also have experience working with grade level students through practicums, student teaching, and substitute teaching. I have assisted teachers with middle school students during a summer technical program as well. I currently hold a M.S. in Education specializing at the Elementary grade levels. I also have a B.F.A. in Photography with a minor in Journalism.
