'Retired' Biologist and Experienced Math Tutor

I have been teaching molecular biology to students and technicians in the laboratory for the past 12 years. In college I taught the human anatomy laboratory and a special research section to other undergraduates. I also tutored fellow students in College Algebra. I am currently tutoring students in math to prepare them for the GED.
I believe my job as a tutor is to find a way to help every student learn. I tell all my students if they don't understand the material, then I have to find another way to explain it. For the past two years, I have been working as an adjunct instructor and tutor in mathematics and computer information systems for a local Community College. This experience has been so fulfilling, that I am diligently pursuing a career change from Information Technology professional to teaching. I also taught mathematics for one year at a private school.
Students generally perform better with hands-on practice. I provide multiple opportunities for hands-on and guided practice as time permits. Associate new concepts to familiar ones. Our memories are largely associative in nature. Therefore, providing connections from new concepts back to well established ones increases our retention and recall. This is especially important in building up understanding in mathematics. Provide relevant examples. A student who is actively enaged in the lesson will learn more.

As a tutor, I try to identify the learning strategies of my students and then build off of those. For example, if I notice that a student is a visual learner, then I will try to incorporate diagrams, models, and schematics that can assist the student in understanding the subject matter or solving the problem. If, on the other hand, a student learns best by reading, then I will provide step by step instructions of how to find answers to various problems, or provide guidance as to how to identify important elements from a text.
