I taught 5 years of high school level science(chemistry, physics, biology, physical science), 3 years at university level, 1 year of chemistry at community college level. . During 5 years of teaching at the high school level, I worked with students rather than just lecturing to them. I developed a student centered understanding of what helps students learn. I brought the course material together in a way that was much easier for students to understand and remember. Student responses showed that they were successful in further pulling together the material to form their own understanding of the course content.

1) Give the person you are turtoring an opportunity to tell you where they are having a problem. 2) While working through problems monitor the person you are tutoring to see if there are other problems. 3) Suggest changes. Never force them. There isn't one correct way. Make a suggestion on how to improve and explain why you are making the suggestion. 4) Do multiple versions of a similar problem. The first time I will complete the problem, explaining each step. The next time the person I am tutoring will guide me through the problem, telling me what to do next. Then the person being tutored will do the problem while I observe. 5)Let them make mistakes. Explain why it is a mistake and show them how to detect it in the future.

I worked my way to lead laboratory technician then to the supervisor of the lab. During this tenure I was responsible for training the other technicians in methods and new techniques. Although I have only been teaching in a classroom setting for the last two semesters, I have spent a great deal of time teaching friends and fellow students over the years. I am very patient and able to adapt to the student with whom I am working. I am a firm believer that learning, and learning math especially, is not a spectator sport and that a great deal of practice is required to fully understand most material. My recent personal experiences have helped me to develop a heightened sense of compassion and an appreciation for teaching. When I volunteered to teach Mathematics and Business Studies (Commerce, Accounting and Economics) in the summer of 2008 in St. Patrick High School in Kenya, I learned to appreciate the teacher’s experience.
