A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching in various forms for over ten years. I was a teaching assistant for four semesters in graduate school. I mentored and tutored people during my time as a Naval officer. I worked for Kaplan Inc for about a year, teaching almost all of their tests, including SAT, ACT, MCAT, LSAT, GRE, and GMAT. I taught mathematics and statistics at Parkland College for three years. I am currently employed as a full-time instructor at a government laboratory...but I'd like to teach more, in the late afternoons, evenings, and weekends!

I worked for Kankakee Community College for one year as a Math and Spanish tutor in 2006 and 2007. During this year, I honed the mathematics I learned through high school as well as the four years of Spanish I had taken to that point. After a year, my classes conflicted with my tutoring schedule but I still wanted to help fellow students so I started independently tutoring. After a year of doing so, I went on hiatus to focus on my final two semesters which centered around extensive lab work as well as research writing.
I believe in taking a casual approach in tutoring. From previous experience, I have found that many times students understand the material but tend to get flustered in a classroom environment. A Little Bit About Me...

I truly enjoy teaching basic physics and mathematics and have been told I am pretty good at it. One of my greatest strengths is the ability to explain a concept in different ways, as of course, people don’t all learn the same way. There’s nothing more rewarding than finding the right explanation and watching the light bulb come on when a student grasps a concept with which they were struggling. Although I am pretty good at classroom presentation, my favorite interaction is one-on-one or in small groups, when teaching can occur that is tailored to an individual. Every student is different. They all have different experiences and learning styles. Sometimes teachers can just try to explain concepts and ideas the way that they understand things. I like to first ask students questions to help me understand where they are, what they specifically do and do not understand. This helps me to figure out how to help the student. Also in my experience, teachers teach only one method of solving a specific problem and that way may not be easy for that student. I like to explain many methods so the student can choose the method he or she understands. Every student can achieve academic success. They just need someone who understands how they learn in order push them forward and give them the confidence they need.
