I have always excelled in school. My master's degree GPA is 3.8. my undergraduate degree GPA is 3.85. As a retired marine officer, I have had many opportunities to teach in a military environment. In addition, I served as the School Liaison Officer for the U. S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay School system for 3 years. During that time I also taught a college freshman English class for Troy State University aboard the base. Upon retirement, I tutored and mentored middle school students for 2 years. I have been in the teaching field for 2 years now and I love it. Although I've taught during VBS and other church functions, I have been in the Gadsden County School District for 2 years. Teaching is a rewarding and humbling experience. One of the most beneficial things for me as an artist is the time I spend researching books for my students. I find that the interacting with art books and magazines is far more engaging for the students than slides. Using a variety of critiquing methods seems to keep the level of energy and interest high. I enjoy using a “silent” critique, where students write each other candid and anonymous messages. I try to give projects that encourage personal investigation. My personal “Monster” project requires that the student write a narrative about a monster based on a personal fear. Then they create a 3-D artwork of the monster in its setting.
