My general approach is to assess the student's learning style and adapt my assistance to that as best as I can. I want to help the student become familiar and comfortable with the subject. I am gifted at breaking the subject down into smaller pieces, allowing the student who is struggling to gain confidence. I love kids - they are often sweet, funny, easily impressed and are a great audience. I know that it is possible to make learning fun through a close, interactive relationship with a student - showing and guiding them through your own discovery of the subject. There have been times when I could feel one of my students learning; it is always a smile-provoking moment and I treasure every one.
I have a Master of Arts degree in English from Utah State University and have taught EFL overseas and within the US. Recently (from 07-08), I worked as a Math Tutor for challenged fifth graders and also for Kindergarteners part-time at Lincoln Elementary in Layton while my son was in pre-school.
