My teaching style could be labeled as Socratic in that I prefer to lead the student to discovering the answers to their own inquiries through a series of guided and redirected questions. Through my prior experience, I have observed that students tend to become overwhelmed by the subject material. By asking the student simple questions that require basic conceptual understanding, the student is able to build confidence and perspective as he draws nearer to a solution. Also, I prefer to emphasize the big picture, rather than the small details of a particular problem, so that the student may become an independent learner. I graduated from MSU in 2001 with a degree in Int'l Relations and Business. In 2007 I returned to school. During that time I took all the pre-reqs for the Accelerated Nursing program, earning a 4.0 in each. The classes included psych, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, bio and chem. Patience and flexibility are the keys. You can't explain a concept the same way to each student and expect each one will understand. Some students need extra time to grasp the material so it's important not to progress unless there's certainty of complete comprhension. Encouragement is also necessary which will build their confidence, and a confident student is a better one.
My BS in Civil Engineering provided me with an extensive education of advanced Mathematics such as Calculus, Dynamics, Physics, and Statics. I worked for 10 years in the field which included design of subdivisions, site condominiums, and other developments. I was a teaching assistant during my graduate school, from 1975 to 1980. I was assisting in College level Mathematics courses, including Algebra, Calculus, CAE applications. The only other experience I had was in assisting my kids during their high school studies and did not do a bad job. One of them is a Hardare Test and Validation Engineer at Intel, Portland, Oregon and the other one is doing Medicine at U. Of M.
Tutoring a student who is not doing too good in his subject is not a one or two class job. I will plan the need depending on the versatility, devotion and perseverence to learn.
