I Help Students Tackle Math With Confidence!

I bring both personality and creativity to math sessions, and I am concerned with the intellectual and emotional well-being of all tutees/students. I currently have a long list of clients that I serve through one-on-one, in-home tutoring--and have both a high success rate and client loyalty with them.
I have enjoyed the personal gratification of tutoring since high school. Since I was 15 years old, I have shared my knowledge and love of mathematics with people of all ages. I attended Spelman College and Georgia Institute of Technology, where I received my Bachelor of Science in both Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. I also tutored my peers at these institutions. My goal is to help students understand the foundation and theory behind math concepts, so that they can tackle any math problem with ease and confidence. Confidence is key!

My comments on tutoring GED : I have tutored students preparing for the GED.

It is important to me that all children reach their best potential in whatever grade I am teaching. I have been in the teaching profession for 20 years and each day brings something different. Although, I came from a family of medical and science background, I have always wanted to teach and after 20 years, I am glad to say that I chose this profession. My goals are to meet each child at his/her learning level and provide the best education possible. I believe in varying my teaching style to suit each child thier cognitive abilities and grade level as it is my belief that all children can learn.
As a college graduate and a teacher, I have aspired to help students from K through college to achieve their goals and to be the best they can be. Aditionally, I have taught all grades K-12 and have implemented Study skills courses for students in Grades 3-12. Currently I am a Math S ... read more

I have worked as a Teacher's Assistant for three years where I did extensive tutoring with one student over the course of the year. I substitute taught for two years where I learned a great deal about schools, particularly elementary schools and their various curriculum and expectations for grade levels. As well, I was a full time tutor and mentor for students at Pine Ridge Academy for a year while I lived in Burlington. I also teach the second grade religious school class at my temple. I am also a substitute teacher for a day school. I believe that many students do not know how to study, and are unsure of where to begin. This is especially true for students entering college, or high school, who never really had to study before. As a tutor, it is my job to help the student break down the material into manageable parts and teach them to identify what is important, and how to get organized. The role of a tutor is to not give you the answers, but to help you get the answers on your own. I can show you how to problem solve, and help with test stress. I am available most evenings, and anytime on the weekends. I am also a member of the International Tutoring Association, and feel free to view my profile on LinkedIn at: http://www.linkedin.com/in/margaretholda

Patience and flexibility are the keys. You can't explain a concept the same way to each student and expect each one will understand. Some students need extra time to grasp the material so it's important not to progress unless there's certainty of complete comprhension. Encouragement is also necessary which will build their confidence, and a confident student is a better one.
My BS in Civil Engineering provided me with an extensive education of advanced Mathematics such as Calculus, Dynamics, Physics, and Statics. I worked for 10 years in the field which included design of subdivisions, site condominiums, and other developments. Correspondence between review engineers on projects required proper writing and grammatical skills. Since October of 2009,I have worked part-time for a Metro Detroit tutoring agency. Subjects include Math, Science, English, and ACT test preparation.

A Little Bit About Me...

To learn math is to do math. In order to do math or chemistry one must know how to read the subject material. I specifically teach students to read the text allowing them the tools to be able to teach themselves. After the student reads each section (before our session) and takes notes he/she and I will then cover all of the material together and I will address any questions the student might have. I teach with real world applications, modeling, and modified teaching based on the needs of each student. Because I enjoy the lifestyle of a teacher so much I have even taken up coaching football, wrestling, and basketball to teach leadership and sportsmanship.
