My comments on tutoring Statistics : Ph.D. is in Statistics

There are three important things that seem very simple that I have learned about tutoring. a) Everyone is scared So much of learning is about dealing with these really harmful notions of self-doubt. I know a guy with a Nobel prize - really, a made in Sweden genuine Nobel prize and he claims that he wrestles with self-doubt when he learns something new. Sometimes my job as tutor is just to get rid of the self-doubt and assure you that you are making progress towards understanding. b)Most of the learning takes place in these short "Aha!" moments and they might be only seconds away. Teaching is really about facilitating learning. The key to good teaching is to find the obstacles, misunderstandings, irrelevancies, etc that are stopping you from the moment of clarity when the subject opens up and you say "That's it?". Sometimes people quit trying when they are literally a couple o ... read more

Experienced and Proactive Educator

I believe that competence and confidence are BOTH important in learning. Students bring their own knowledge and learning styles to the process. It is the teachers job not only to adapt instructional style to best support the learner, but also to help the student understand his or her own learning style and needs.
Experienced and New York State Certified teacher. I have over 10 years experience teaching students in grades 1-12 and 5 years experience teaching adults. I also have extensive tutoring experience. I have an MA from Marist College as well as a BA from NYU. I have designed and taught SAT prep classes (verbal/writing portion) as well as developing curriculum integrating diverse domains of knowledge to create a broad, deep and flexible learning experience for students.

Everyone needs a little help here and there.

Hi! I am a certified math teacher with 20 years of experience working with students from elementary school through college. I have a Master's degree in Mathematics and a Master's degree in Education also. I am very comfortable teaching all different age groups and enjoy working with students one-on-one. One-on-one teaching helps me understand their strengths and weaknesses. I try to listen to my students' needs and evaluate that first, and then based on that I provide support, guidance, advice and encouragement to students on issues regarding their progress in education. I am very consistent and patient with my students. Since math is very cumulative, I always like to spend some time to review the prior and old material to fill in the gaps and then teach the new material. Since July 1992, I have enjoyed carrying out my responsibilities as a math educator. I enjoy working with children w ... read more

I have a double degree in Accounting and Finance and have had the opportunity to put these degrees to use in the workplace. Whether it's financial statement analysis or remediation, I have the hands on experience in accounting and finance that enables me to relate classroom concepts to real world problems. Being able to teach real world applications helps the student understand the reasons behind the rules established by the leading authorities in accounting.
I thoroughly enjoy accounting and would be honored to work with children and young adults in teaching them the skills I have gained throughout the years. I believe in teaching hands on and focusing on children's strengths rather than their weaknesses. I also have the patience and the desire to work with children and teach them the fundamentals of accounting. Their future can be promising if they master the basics. Once the b ... read more

I am a life long learner, and encourage all students to be life long learners as well. I love working with all children and have a true confidence that all children can learn, although possibly through different teaching styles. I am patient and work well with others (parents/guardians/professionals) to meet the needs of each and every student. I find that the environment in which the student is placed plays a major role in how and what is learned. My main goal is to make a difference in all students' lives and find that the most rewarding parts of teaching derive from the nurturing relationships I forged with every student and the sense of confidence they felt as they experienced success and growth within themselves.
Through my University’s thorough teacher preparation program, I worked with general education students and students with disabilities. I promote the development and w ... read more

My BS and MS in Chemical Engineering degrees have given me an in-depth knowledge of concepts in math. During 13 years in the pharma industry, I used my skills to succeed and earn awards, honors and patents. After 12 years as a mentor and volunteer, I changed my career because I really enjoyed working with young people. I decided to change my career through a MAT program which included a student teaching experience. I taught math to a mixed ability class using a constructionist philosophy where students discover and explore topics in math rather than having the topics dictated to them. I believe my experiences in student teaching as well as my educational background and work experience combine to make me a great teacher.
My philosophy of education is that everyone can learn and that it is my duty and passion to help them. Every person and every child has within them a unique ... read more

I think the best way a student can learn is one-on-one because then they are less fearful to ask questions or make a mistake. This is helpful because then the tutor can see where the students are struggling, and focus on that area. I also think the best way for students to learn is through having something modeled, then guide them through an example, and then done on their own. I believe that patience is a key to being a successful math tutor, because many people do not understand math as easily as others. Problems may need to be done over and over again, or reteaching in many different ways until the students can understand the material in a way that makes sense to them.
I have been tutoring at Sacred Heart University for three years now. For the first year, I worked as a Classroom Learning Assistant, where students could come whenever I had my hours and I would help as many stud ... read more
