While I perfectly respect all of these new theories and methods of both teaching and learning, it must not be forgotten that each student is unique in their style and commitment. I believe all children have the ability/aptitude to learn the information given to them, but it's the way that information is presented that will stay with your child forever. I feel it is my job to not only present this same information to your child in a new way, but to, in essence, teach your child how to learn and teach themselves. In my military experience, I see all sorts of learning styles and ability levels. After finishing my PhD I went to work for Monsanto as an organic analytical chemist. My speciality was the use of mass spectrometry to understand organic chemical reactions and the products and impurities that were formed. I started tutoring math when I attended Faulkner State College. I then attended the University of South Alabama where I tutored math and physics. I have tutored all levels of math and also tutored not only physics, but lab activites as well. I have always been a quick learner when it comes to mathematics. It is something that comes almost natural to me. With that said, I understand that this is not the case for everyone. I feel that a good majority of people hate math because they don't understand math, and because they don't understand math right away, they don't try to understand it. I had a wise professor once tell me, "Math isn't difficult; there is no such thing as difficult math. It just seems difficult because you haven't learned it yet". I try to meet my student’s needs by listening and patiently repeating a problem until concepts are grasped and applied. I am at ease working with students who view math as their worst subject and need to have concepts explained in various ways. In each of the math topics I review with a student I try to merge its mathematical and scientific history into the session to help make it more relevant to each student. I have fourteen years of instructional experience teaching mathematics and statistics at the college and community college level, and two years teaching secondary mathematics.
