I feel like if I can put together a lesson that gives children a motivation to learn, they will learn on a deeper level than if I am merely telling them information. With my middle school math students whom I tutored, this meant that we learned about fractions through art. It was not enough to explain to them how fractions worked, I realized that they needed to experience fractions. It is easy to talk at a student about how to do a problem. But experience has shown me that this rarely works. Initially, it is important that I learn as much as I can about how the student is doing with the topic involved. I try to use diagrams, graphing calculators, and other visual aids as much as possible. When appropriate, I ask the student to explain to me as much as they can about a topic. This helps me see how much he or she knows and where I should begin in order to help him or her succeed.
