I love teaching. Tutoring has been my favorite job so far, and although I was unable to continue working with Tutor.com due to time restrictions, I now am free to work with students and would like to tutor again. I am extremely patient with students, and my solid understanding of subject matter allows me to think of multiple ways in which I can help a student through a problem. Many people describe engineers as socially backwards, but I am extremely well-spoken and am great at communicating my ideas. During my undergraduate career I discovered my passion for teaching. I also discovered that being an educator in the sciences is particularly tricky because it deals with some of the most abstract information with seemingly little real world application. Most people struggle with the sciences and, in their frustration, often give up. My philosophy for teaching has always been to do whatever it takes to keep my students interested and engaged. I like children to learn through exploring. This is not to say that I do not teach, but I plan lessons in a way that allows students to learn at their own pace. I feel like if I can put together a lesson that gives children a motivation to learn, they will learn on a deeper level than if I am merely telling them information. With my middle school math students whom I tutored, this meant that we learned about fractions through art. It was not enough to explain to them how fractions worked, I realized that they needed to experience fractions. We spent the same amount of time as the regular class did on fractions, but my students were able to better explain their work.
