I believe that it is unrealistic to expect students to learn at the same rate and have identical learning styles, so teachers must differentiate their instruction to account for all types of learning abilities, levels, interests, and talents. I began my teaching career as a tutor for first grade ESL students. The following year I was hired by the Chicago Public School system as a third grade teacher, where I taught for six years. Since leaving, I have worked as a substitute-teacher for several school districts where I am currently employed.
When I was a classroom teacher, I tried as much as possible to individualize my instruction. I would begin each lesson with whole class instructions, but once the students began the work, I would move around the room in order to give more focused attention to those that required it. My classroom always focused on personal progress rather than comparisons.
