I worked for Kankakee Community College for one year as a Math and Spanish tutor in 2006 and 2007. During this year, I honed the mathematics I learned through high school as well as the four years of Spanish I had taken to that point. After a year, my classes conflicted with my tutoring schedule but I still wanted to help fellow students so I started independently tutoring. From my tutoring experience in college, I have learned that everyone has a different learning style. In order to be an excellent tutor, one needs to adapt to their tutee’s needs. One also needs to be patient with their tutee. It is very important to be able to explain a problem in several different ways in case the first few ways do not make sense to the tutee. I believe that the best way for a student to learn is through practice and determination. I do not hand the answers to my tutees, but rather I guide them through the problem so they are able to do the next one by themselves. I have two bachelor degrees, one in computer science, the other in mathematics with a type 09 cert (6-12). I belong to Mensa and the NCTM, and have excellent English and decent Spanish speaking and writing skills. I have taught and tutored in mathematics and computer science for quite awhile, and I earned a 95% on my PSAT and a 32 on my ACT.
Generally, I'm a constructivist, and I believe the best method of tutoring is providing a completely individuated scaffold for any student.
