Creative Learning

I will try to diagnose your best way to learn, and then teach you in that manner. Usually, I like to see you master a fundamental issue, and then immediately teach it to someone else.
I have always tutored informally, whether fellow classmates or nieces and nephews. My formal teaching career began as a Teaching assistant at Johns Hopkins University for a field ecology class. I continued as a guest lecturer at various universities and seminars relating to field ecology and oil spill clean-up. I have 20 years experience in field environmental remediations now, that is cleaning up oil spills. I have taught various seminars and presented academic papers at such institutions as Battelle. I do not know what my teaching style is. I have instructed large groups and had one on one learning sessions as well. I have dominated the communication time and I have been a listener. I have out right provided examples and I have merely provided encouragement for a student to continue their thought process. I believe everyone learns differently and therefore it is important to be flexible. Post-pubescent persons have a great capacity to learn abstract material; all that is necessary to open that potential is to motivate them. I do not specialize in that motivation. I do, however, excel at taking a puzzled student and explaining the difficult material in a way that makes sense to him or her. When I teach reading, I convey my love of reading. When I teach math, I convey the logical beauty of math. When I teach other subjects, I stress the importance of the material and how it is relevant to everyday life. In Sunday school this week, we combined with another class, so there were people there who aren’t usually. Several of them thanked me and let me know how much they got out of it. My response is that I am a teacher. It’s who I am and what I do.
I was a corporate trainer for 3 years, followed by 12 years serving as a software instructor. Prior to and throughout this time, I also taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible school, teaching everyone from 2 year olds to adults. Most students are very capable, they just need someone to explain the material in a way they understand. Some students are visiual learners, other kinetic learners or they learn by doing.
