When I was in high school I tutored other students in science and math. In college I majored in psychology (BA University of Missouri), and then statistics (MA University of Missouri, PhD Carnegie Mellon University). I taught and tutored all levels of undergraduate statistics, with emphasis on behavioral science majors. In my classes and tutoring I met students (and classmates) from diverse parts of the world.
Learning requires practice, so I emphasize practice to mastery, following Kumon. In tutoring, it is usually the case that the students can learn most of the subject without a tutor, but that each student who has difficulty has a difficulty not shared by most other students, hence not covered in class or homework. I believe that education is essential. Still, I recognize that my education has never been the consequence of my own determination alone. My family, professors, and friends have played an essential role in my education, having an incredible impact on what I learn and how I learn it. My teachers have always been incredibly effective because they are enthusiastic and willing to take the extra steps to ensure that I too love the material or at least have respect for it, creating within me a desire to learn and know more. I primarily focus on concepts and fundamentals. Most often I try to follow the instructors teaching style so the student can go to the class and does not feel lost. Although sometimes, I try different techniques based on how well the student is doing. I am very patient and I try my best to keep the session interesting and also at times challenging.
