A Little Bit About Me...

I worked for Kankakee Community College for one year as a Math and Spanish tutor in 2006 and 2007. During this year, I honed the mathematics I learned through high school as well as the four years of Spanish I had taken to that point. After a year, my classes conflicted with my tutoring schedule but I still wanted to help fellow students so I started independently tutoring. After a year of doing so, I went on hiatus to focus on my final two semesters which centered around extensive lab work as well as research writing.
I believe in taking a casual approach in tutoring. From previous experience, I have found that many times students understand the material but tend to get flustered in a classroom environment. My teaching style involves demonstrating how to understand a problem or perform a task before I ask the student to do so. Every student is different, therefore every student has different needs. Every student also can learn differently, whether it be by incorporating more or less visual learning strategies, auditory learning strategies, or using more of the "hands on" approach. My teaching style is Socratic. I find out where the student's understanding lies, and then I lead them through the process of discovery. This is an interactive process. I do not believe that a student will stay involved if they are not actively engaged. Math is somewhat different. After breaking down the method of problem-solving used in the student's textbook, I would guide them step-by-step through the problem-solving process. It is essential to acknowledge the student's effort through praise and encouragement. It is very important to provide the parents with feedback regarding their child's progress.
