Tutoring should serve the student's benefit in both the short-run and long-run. In the short run, I make sure the student has his or her specific questions answered thoroughly and the specific concept learned. I also teach students to be independent thinkers so that in the long run, they are trained to apply a logical, systematic problem-solving approach to a wide variety of academic situations and have a fluent understanding of the subject they are learning. At the same time, I also aim to ensure that the tutoring has led to tangible results in of academic improvement.

My comments on tutoring Physics : University minor in Physics

I use the heuristic style - teach a little; now you try it! The student learns best what they learn from within. At my English boarding school, that is the way we were taught, and it worked. Also, I show them different study methods to see what works for them. I have read widely on psychology. Early on, I assess a student's best learning mode - visual, aural, spatial, numerical, verbal, etc., and play to it. While being active in drama I learned how to 'read' the hearers and viewers. Many of my former students are teachers. Sometimes they recommend students to me when their students pass beyond the teacher's comfort zone. Occasionally student's stop seeing me, and months or years later I hear things like: 'Guess what, I made 100% on the final.'; 'I was the only grad. school entrant who passed the exemption test for Physical Chemistry'; 'I made the Headmaster's list for th ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I do enjoy helping students with their problems. I have a technique of visualization. for example, which is the first example I use. I tell the student to think of a tree. in the seconds you think of a tree, you don't think of just the tree. you think of the roots, the trunk, the limbs, the branches, the leaves. then you think of whats going on in the tree, right down to the point of the tree taking in carbon dioxide and giving off oxygen and water. Why is the tree giving off water. most people do not know that the tree is making water because it is attaching hydrogen to the oxygen to get rid of the hydrogen, acid. I can apply this same visualization to almost anything.

I wouldn't have a "professional" description for teaching style as my education was solidly based in the sciences. However, I believe that by teaching intuitive thought processes and critical thinking skills, students can easily adapt to the tasks given be they in science or liberal arts.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that kids learn best when they have incentive, whether it is something they relate to or something they find interesting. I believe few will find homework interesting, unless it is relatable to their daily lives. I like to facilitate the process and let the child make his/her own discovery with minimal intrusion by the instructor. Self discovery is more satisfying than using a force fed method of rote learning.
I'm a graduate of Georgia Tech '87 with a Masters degree, since then I've worked with numerous Department of Defense contractors working on projects ranging from Image Processing to Missile Simulation. I enjoy math and like to involve myself with bright young minds by planting a seed that someday will blossom into outstanding scientist. Although my teaching credentials is somewhat limited, I thought I'd challenge myself with this new endeavor.

As a Magna Cum Laude graduate from Claflin University, I have just completed a bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. I have experience with tutoring my peers in mathematics, biology, and chemistry. In addition, I have served as an English tutor for two years at the Claflin University Writing Center.
My description of teaching involves directly explaining the material to the student and then have the student to teach me the subject or concept that was just learned. This insures that the student fully understands the concept, thus the concept can be applied to problem solving. In addition, I like to actually sit down with the student and go over the assigned or completed work to make sure that the student is understanding and applying the material correctly.

I use a combined demonstration and discussion style for lecture and introduction of topics to be studied. Labs are a demonstration followed by a monitored hands-on work experience. I integrate reading and computational skills into my subject matter and use contemporary internet sources to supplement all content items. Practice assignments are designed as reinforcers for the most important skills and topics of the lesson. Homework is for quality, not for quantity. Testing is always followed by analysis and reinforced correctives. Good tests become learning tools.

Although I have taught at the college level for the most part, I feel comfortable tutoring younger students and feel that my teaching style can be adjusted so it is applicable to all students. I believe in a one on one teaching approach in which the crowded classroom lecture style can be narrowed down, studied, and rethought to allow for individual approach and understanding in order to allow the student's level of comprehension to dictate the learning pace.

Teaching others cannot be defined by one style of teaching. The way to teach is by learning first how the student receives the information. Auditory learners and Visual learners require two different methods of teaching. The key is to make the information understandable to the student by breaking the information down in any format. Knowledge is power and satisfaction. I remember the feeling I get from learning something new and grasping the subject and I want others to feel this exciting feeling too.
