My comments on tutoring Genetics : As a graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, I have to say Genetics was one of my favorite sub-topics. It's incredibly fun to teach and the complexities break down easily into a handful of mechanisms. If you need help understanding genetics in high school or college, then I am glad to offer my services!

For tutoring, I prefer face-to-face lessons, because it makes it easier for me to gauge how well the student is understanding the material. I try to explain concepts in a variety of ways to find out how the student learns best, whether through repetition, example, metaphor, application... whatever works! I have tutored kids with all kinds of needs and a few with pretty short attention spans :) For piano lessons, I would use the Alfred library of teaching materials, as that is how I was taught and it works wonders on new learners! In addition to reading music, I would focus on performance techniques and theory as well.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have helped tutor since I was a freshman in high school. I began working with kindergarteners through third grade students on reading and writing. Throughout my sophomore year of high school I tutored middle school math students (ages 11-14) and helped to train our "Mathalon" team. My junior and senior years of high school I mostly helped biology students prepare for the regents exams, as well as continued in the after school reading program for kindergarteners and preschoolers. In college I began tutoring many students for the spanish regents exam and continued helping others prepare for their biology and chemistry regents exams. Genetics is one of my top subjects! I have just completed a PhD in genetics (specifically plant genetics) and I was a TA for Cornell's Introduction to Genetics class for 8 semesters

Though my experience is mostly in molecular biology, it can be expanded to general life sciences. Learning how to learn is increasing the speed of learning in those aspects of intelligence in which one is inept. Chemistry is a very abstract science, and many people find it confusing. I am a visual learner, and so my first approach to teaching is using visual aids. I usually draw, use diagrams, or try to paint a mental picture for my students of what I'm trying to teach them. I am excellent at explaining complex terms so any layperson can understand them. I have only worked with teenage/young 20s people, so have less experience with a younger crowd.
