I believe in taking a casual approach in tutoring. From previous experience, I have found that many times students understand the material but tend to get flustered in a classroom environment. I provide guidance when needed, but sometimes students just need someone there to talk it out with them. If this is the case I like to ask questions until they find the answers themselves. This method not only teaches them the material, but also builds confidence because they realize they can figure out much of it themselves.
I worked for Kankakee Community College for one year as a Math and Spanish tutor in 2006 and 2007. When working with students, I believe that the primary responsibility of learning falls on the student. My role is to help the student make sense of complicated material. It is also to encourage them and build their confidence in what they do know. It is to help them identify where they are having problems and help find solutions to those problems.
My teaching experience comes mostly as a teaching assistant during college. Most of this work was in the laboratory portion of general biology classes, with occasional hours of lecture. My duties included preparing materials and answering student questions. Later I was in charge of a laboratory section, which meant that I prepared test materials and was the sole instructor in the class.
