A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working as a Substitute teacher for the last six years in Georgia as well as in the State of Washington. As my resume will indicate, I have experience at tutoring in the four major core subjects (Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies). I recently moved back home to the Wilson area after more than 30 years. I attended Elvie Street Elementary, 1963-67, Coon Junior High 1968, Darden High School 1970-71, Fike High School 1972-73 and graduated from Elm City High School in 1973. I feel as though every child can achieve the impossible, and with the help of someone giving them the attention that they deserve and need, they will feel better about themselves as well. A Little Bit About Me...

I began my work, with youth, in 1983 when I worked with incarcerated youth at the Highland Youth Center in upstate NY. I later taught high school social studies at Mount Vernon, HS in Mount Vernon, NY where I also tutored after school. I eventually traveled to Benin, West Africa where I taught at a local British School and taught and tutored at the American Language Center. I have experience teaching diverse populations.
I love teaching and watching students learn and grow. I feel that tutoring gives, a teacher, an opportunity to give a child one-on-one attention, therefore, enhancing one's potential at learning. I believe, that as children are our future, it is our responsibility to prepare them to be productive and useful citizens.

More About This Tutor...

I try to make things as fun as possible, and I try to help the student understand by putting the subject in a way that suits their interests. I like to joke around with the students, because it puts them at ease, and it develops a relationship with them that is hard to come by. Without that relationship, the teaching is harder, and the learning is harder. I still get the curriculum across, but in a way that the student understands.
I have taught all levels of high school English and all types of academic achievement within those levels. I am currently a middle school teacher. I have worked with AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) as well. I have worked with students either one on one or via the whole class to improve reading, writing, and test-taking skills. I am also pursuing a certificate in Social Studies, as I have a degree in Political Science.
