I have tutored students in reading programs from first grade to the High School Equivalency program. I also have a B.S. in broadcast journalism and currently am a literacy teacher in the fifth grade at LaFollette Elementary School in Campbell County. I currently tutor a fifth grade student and a first grade student after school but have plenty of time to add to my schedule. I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. My experience is inclusive of training in the use of databases, such as, Microsoft Access. I have taught in all elementary grade levels. I taught preschool for 2 years, taught kindergarten 1 year, taught 7-8 grade remedial Math for 1 year. I then taught in the same K-12 school for 28 years. I taught the 4th grade for 26 years where I taught English, Reading, Writing, and Social Studies. I have a somewhat relaxed teaching style that does not compromise the distinction or respect between student and teacher. This teaching style results in a classroom atmosphere where students feel comfortable responding to my questions and asking for further clarification about complex topics. Many students have told me that my teaching style is refreshing and they feel comfortable in class. With my numerous experiences in education, I think I could be a great asset in helping students become more knowledgeable.
