I began working as an English teacher 6 years ago, when I was living in Japan. I had originally moved to Japan to work as a designer, but after a year I started teaching English, which is something I'd always wanted to do. Over the following 4 years I worked at 4 different kindergartens, all of which were affiliated with Sunnyside International (my employer). It is very important to assess what the student already knows and the level of understanding they hold at the beginning. It is also important to make sure that what they know is correct and that they are not confused or misunderstanding the material. After which, getting to know the individual style of learning for each student will insure that time is used efficiently and that the student is understanding and retaining the material being taught. People have all different manners of learning information, and most people need a lot of visuals and real life experiences, especially if their first language is not English. Teachers should be able to get to know each of their students and differentiate their instruction to help all of their students. Tutoring is a great way for teachers to get to know students better and thus better address their needs with quality instruction.
