Math tutor

I have tutored many people of various ages, past students have been as young as 5 and as old as 17. I am 18 years old but am highly skilled in the area of mathematics having taken 8 math classes above Algebra 1. I like to teach and I also like to hear how people learn. I like to relate the subject matter to something that the student enjoys so it is easier for them to grasp. I do try to get students to make discoveries for themselves so that they retain the information longer. I try to instill a sense of passion with my work and I encourage learning beyond the accepted minimum. Based on my age I may seem inexperienced but I assure you that my skills are plentiful and I can rise to any needs.
I try to adapt my style to the needs of the student so I can teach in many different ways.

I plan to double major in mathematics and physics and then transfer to a graduate college, where I will be studying for my masters in engineering. My passion for math comes from my desire to be an engineer in the future, and since then I have disciplined myself to getting good grades in math. In high school, I took every possible math class that was offered and graduated with honors and a 4.9 GPA. I am currently taking calculus and physics and hope to keep getting good grades in both subjects.

I love to teach and to see the students actually understanding the concept and putting the context into action. I try to teach the big picture first - if the student understands why they need the subject and how it will benefit them in their future, it makes the learning relevant. I am personable and down to earth, making examples at the students level. I try to keep the learning real.

A Little Bit About Me...

It is critical, in learning statistics, to understand why we are doing what we're doing. So I like to start with basic ideas and concepts, often using illustrative examples, before moving on to formulas. Giving students a grounding in the rationale for a particular formula, I've found, helps them to comprehend and therefore remember the math much more readily.
I began tutoring statistics at the Shepherd University Academic Support Center in August of 2009 and continued in this capacity until my graduation in May of 2010. I had previously tutored for friends in an unofficial capacity. I am very confident with the fundamentals of statistics, ranging from introductory concepts like means and standard deviations to more advanced ones, such as the central limit theorem, correlation and regression (linear and multiple), and nonparametric tests. I frequently tutored 5-6 students a month i ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of the Department of Engineering at Vanderbilt University, I feel I am very qualified in tutoring Calculus 1 and 2. Not only have I taken the classes both in high school and during my time at Vanderbilt, the engineering curriculum reinforced these theories by integrating Calculus into nearly every core class that I took. My degree taught me how to think analytically, forced me to learn quickly, and demanded that I be able to communicate effectively within a team.
Teaching is something that has always come natural to me. Whether its giving golf lessons out at the local country club, or teaching my younger siblings math and chemistry. It is something that I enjoy and I will persist until results are shown. My teaching style is to first observe, then diagnose flaws and work from there. I have much faith in the capability of the human brain and believe each individual is ... read more
