My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I enjoy working with students with dyslexia. I have found that all students are gifted regardless of any special needs, and students with dyslexia are no exception. These kids need help with study skills, work habits, fine motor skills, organization, and social skills, as well as interest/career direction and testing.I have worked with curriculum such as Touch Math, Step Up to Writing, Explode the Code, Saxon Phonics, Dolch, and Handwriting Without Tears. Using these and other curriculums, I have had great success with these gifted students.

As a special education teacher with both my special education and multiple subject credentials, I believe in multi-modality teaching as well as changing activities frequently to keep kids engaged. I also consider myself a "connection specialist." Connecting interpersonally with students and parents creates trust, self confidence, and a desire to learn. My communication, interpersonal skills, and customer service skills are strong, and I come with stellar evaluations from both administration and parents in the charter school system for the past three years. My children look forward to their time with Kimberly. I am able to keep track of their progress with the parent feedback forms that Kimberly gives every week. My son has now been exited from the Special Education program and his confidence has greatly improved after three years of Kimberly's consistent efforts." Lorraine -parent/educa ... read more

I have been a substitute teacher for about 10 years specializing in math & physics. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering plus 20+ years of maintenance/engineering experience. I incorporate practical examples in teaching to give students in depth knowledge in a practical sense. I gather my examples from my varied career experiences from the Military, Aircraft, Engineering, Manufacturing/Maintenance & Computer fields. I sporadically tutors students in my specialty.
I use the Active Participation strategy because it engages the learner not only in understanding but in contributing as well. This active learning process combined with introduction of practical uses/examples of the the subject matter provides a deeper meaning. But most of all the Objective,Purpose, and what their interests are, must be known so that these can be incorporated in the learning process.

I love making a difference in a child's life, whether it is academic or to get them organized to be more successful in the long run. I feel that I am patient and lack judgment on the child as each child is different and learns in different ways. After struggling with my academic career, I feel that my best way of helping the child is help them since I did not always have the resources available to succeed. I want them to feel that they can do anything.

A Little Bit About Me...

Even before I went to college and earned my B.A., I had already taught two years of ESL in Kachin State, Burma. I came back to the US and earned my degree in East Asian Studies at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. A few months after I graduated I went to the People's Republic of China and taught English as a Second Language from 2003 through 2006. In addition, I have completed all coursework for my M.A. in General Education, however, I have not finished the degree which requires student teaching. I am currently employed as a substitute teacher for two local school districts.
My teaching style depends on the needs of the particular students. I assess the style needed for a particular lesson and use visuals, such as PowerPoint presentations, textbooks, as well as audio, with such tools as are available after individual assessments. My love of teaching is stimulated most when working with students who require the most assistance. Through my study in Educational Psychology, I have learned that all students have their own learning styles; I am able to quickly recognize students' learning styles and fashion my teaching style to what works best for each student. I employ a great deal of Vygotsky's research when teaching; that is to say that I fully understand Vygotsky's notion of how students' learning curves require a variety of sources to pull from such as media, books, music, and other people with whom to discuss their learning experiences.
My doctoral dissertation examined college-level remedial reading and writing students in an effort to determine if adding online instruction to traditional instruction would improve student performance. My dissertation explored five hypotheses, and I found statistical signif ... read more

My Teaching Style is to build a relationship with the student and their family. That is based on trust, confidence and a great deal of praise. Everyones performance is driven by the encouragement that they get on a daily basis. So a very important part of my teaching style is to include the whole family. As well as to encourage them to praise my student daily. Also they must provide activities that challenge their mind and build there confidence. This allows everyone to be a part of their success. For example: If they are working on reading skills. They must allow the child to read to them nightly.
I love to tutor because it gives me an opportunity to help students build their skills and to teach them that they have the ability to learn anything, they want to learn and are willing to put their mind, determination and dedication into. I strongly believe that most if not all students ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a lifelong learner, I'm always motivated by students who have a curiosity for improving their own skills. I have a BA in liberal arts from Vassar College and a MS in Education from Queens College, which I earned through the full-time work/part-time study New York City Teaching Fellowship. I am fluent in Spanish, conversant in Japanese and French, and am always excited about learning more languages. As a special education teacher, I've worked with large classrooms, team taught with colleagues, and overseen the development of children with more severe disabilities in reading, writing, and math.
I believe that education should be tailored to the needs, abilities, and learning styles of each student. I believe in consistent positive reinforcement and praise, and in tracking and measuring skills so that students have evidence of their progress. A Little Bit About Me...

When you meet me in person you will immediately feel that I am someone who relates well with children and teens. I get to know students on a personal level and find out their learning style and modes of learning. I also assess their current skill level and knowledge of the subject so that I know where from where to start. There are often "holes" of information that are missing from students that can cause increasing problems as lessons build upon knowledge previously learned. Tutoring helps to fill those holes and to help kids find success! I am exceedingly patient, flexible and am very professional. I truly care about each success and frustration in my students and I believe in kids when everyone else has given up on them.

Since I have worked students with a wide variety of learning issues; I feel that I am well prepared to assess and deliver educational materials and instruction to any student. I understand that each student has his learning style and prefers specific modalities such as: games & puzzles, logical sequential, the arts, naturalistic, etc. Although those would not be the only modalities I would use to educate my students, I feel that I must acknowledge this and respond with a portion of the lessons directed at personal interest. Also, the student's learning environment is important. My students are the recipients of a positive climate where tangible rewards/awards are delivered along with praise, emotional support and encouragement.

I love teaching and working with all childern. I believe that all childern have the abilty to learn. I am a believer that childern can learn anything if given the chance. As a child who grew up with a mild disabilty i know how hard it is to have teachers who belive in you. now that i am voluteering at a special needs preschool, i treat all childern with respect and kindness that they deserve. All childern have the potiental to suceed and become an important part of society. I belive that i can make a diffrence in a childs life if i take the time to indivually learn the needs and gifts of each of my childern and consentrate on this, instead of the childerns diffrence.
